Jim Mick of the infamous Mick-O-Pegs is working on Engine Guards for the K1600. Anybody know the diameter of the Engine Guards? Jim needs to know so he can go going on this. Those of us who have had Mick-O-Pegs on previous bikes know they make those long days a lot more comfortable. IMO - much better then J-Pegs or Highway Ottomans. Following is an e-mail from Jim Mick:
Doug,
We have plans to make Mick-O-Pegs for the K1600s. If the engine guards are 1" diameter, we already have a couple of models (for the GL1800) which appear to be a good match that will tuck in tightly when not used and then rotate down and out to allow your legs to clear the lower edge of the fairing. But being a small company, we need to have a vonunteer to allow us to use their bike for measurements and product design/options. There's an owner here in southern Michigan who has offered his bike, but he hasn't received his engine guards yet so we are still dead in the water.
It will help to have someone measure the diameter of the bar for us.
I'm wondering if the fairing will push your legs out to far at the point where your feet will reach the pegs. I found this to be an issue for me on an LT and RT.
Ken
I'm wondering how the Mick-o-Pegs prototype is coming. Their website says they developed one in Oct and "Mike" is testing them and will post his review in this forum.... Mike, what's the word? (or did Michigan get snowed in before testing completed?)

I got this nice reply from the folks at Mick. Still curious about Mike's experience but sounds like final result will have to til spring.
Ted,
Thanks for being interested in Mick-O-Pegs for your K1600GT/L.
I'm forwarding you question to Mike and am asking him to reply.* You won't see his address, but he'll get this.
Since we are a small company and can't afford to purchase all the new bikes, we rely on gracious riders who will allow us to use their bike for design work and then we ask them to test and make recommendations.* Mike has been a big help in considering changes since the first several hundreds of miles weren't perfect for him.
Unfortunately, our riding season here in Michigan is over for the Winter except for the few riders willing to take their bikes out when salt is on the road, but maybe Mike will give you an update personally (not filtered/modified by us).

Hello,
I thought I'd give everybody and update on my experience with the Mick-O-Pegs.
First, I'd like to start with how my bike is set up. I have a Russell seat with a backrest and the Suburban peg lowering kit. With the seat, which is one inch higher than the BMW high seat, and the lowering pegs my bike is extremely comfortable to ride without the Mick-O-Pegs.
I currently have 15,000 miles on the bike and about 1,000 of those miles are with the Mick-O-Pegs. On day trips near home, the pegs don't get much use but on longer trips they really make a difference. It's so nice to be able to change foot position on those high mileage days.
The pegs bolt onto the crash bars without any problem. When in use they are comfortable and easy to access. My lower legs just clear the fairing so I don't feel stretched like I did with the j-pegs on my previous LT. While on the expressway, I can easily leave my feet on the pegs in comfort for long periods. Speaking of feet, anyone with the hot foot problem would experience an immediate cool down. (Good in the summer but not so good in real cold weather.)
Aesthetically, they don't add much to the bike but I'm more than willing to trade that for comfort on long mileage days. The pegs are very easily taken on and off so if you just wanted to use them on long trips, that would be doable.
The pegs are an improvement for me on an already wonderful bike and it's been a positive experience working with Jim and Ted at Mick-O-Pegs.
Thanks, Mike!
I'll definitely be getting a set when they go into production. I think I'll do that mod before going to a custom seat. I'm pretty comfortable with the GTL high seat and think the highway pegs will make the difference for all day rides. I'm with you in terms of comfort over looks, as long as they're not b*tt ugly. And easy on/off is a plus.
Thanks again for the helpful write up.
