The top case luggage rack on Nelliebelle is complete! I sent 8 photos of work in progress and the completed project to Bill Small for publication on this forum. If anyone wants them before they show up here please PM me and I will get them off to you.
The radio reception for am/fm does not appear to be lessened with just the rack in place. I should receive my waterproof duffle tomorrow so will fill it with clothes and such, lash it down and give the radio a try then.
Total time for install, after the outer top case is removed...90 minutes. Lots of blue painters tape in the drilling area but otherwise pretty easy. Drill the holes thru the INNER top case liner FIRST, THEN put the outer top case back on, lay on three layers of blue tape and drill gently UP thru the outer top case. Easy! The placement of the rack feet is critical but eminently do-able. Just be careful and methodical. I taped the area of the foot holes inside and out of the inner case liner, then placed the rack, marked with fine tip black magic marker, find the center of each marked hole and drill with 3mm pilot drill to make initial hole, follow with 6mm bit. When you have the rack in place on the inner case, tape it in place before you use the magic marker to ensure no rack movement during the marking process. Tighten bolts to SNUG only...no more. The Rocketmoto washer kit works great and looks great!

Yes, Wunderlich rack. As previously stated the washers supplied with the rack are utterly worthless. Get some 1.5" fender washers and neoprene backer washers for INSIDE the inner case. The Rocketmoto washer set is usable as is on the outer top case. The washer set cones with matching inner washers but, as the pics show, I opted for larger to distribute the load over more area. The specs state max of 22 lbs on the rack. My intent is to fill the duffle with light bulky stuff and keep the heavy stuff in the side panniers down low.

You better check the max load of the top case, so you can combine the weight of the top case contents + whatever the rack is carrying. It may end up that you should carry far less than 22lbs on the rack if you've got a full case.

It does look great! I have been flip flopping on installing a rack. My current Gold Wing doesn't have one and I have wished it did more than once. These pictures help a lot to demystifying the process with the antenna. THANKS!!

My thought on having more weight up high is to avoid it! The "Plan" is to use the waterproof duffle bag to hold lightweight but bulky stuff on the top case rack (sweatshirts, skivvies, rain shell) and put the heavier items, Dopp kit, shoes, guns, toiletries, etc., in the side panniers. However, when riding solo it probably will not make much difference. A lady pax would probably add more weight ( although it is eminently true that it would NOT be much, if any, more...) up higher than a loaded luggage rack.

It's aesthetically important to drill in the right spot to ensure the rack is in proper alignment with the external case. Why drill from the inner case up and chance drifting the drill bit a little before drilling through the outer case? You sound confident so I'm sure you're correct…. just not intuitive. Any further insight?

I meant to mention this a month ago, but Jet Jockey showed at my house as promised. In about 3 hrs, he had my rack installed. There were a couple curve balls, as each top case and rack is slightly different as to fitment, but it finished up beautifully. Eternally grateful for the kindness and expertise.

I am hoping I can use these instructions to get my dealership to install it during my 6k service. Too much work to do to pay for my upcoming Canada ride, or I'd install it myself!

Thanks for the pictures and details!

I'm new to the forum as I just purchased an Exclusive this last fall. Had a chance to ride it a few times before the Wyoming winter shut me down.
Thanks for the photos of the rack install. Nice job. I will be mounting this rack and if I just center it on the trunk, would it miss the antenna? Or do I need to separate the top & bottom of the trunk to make sure where the antenna is?
I'm just wanting to save a little time if possible.
Thanks to all for the valuable feedback on various topics.

I too would like to know the answer to this, if anybody knows?

thanks,

It's a great rack, but it's kind of a pain that it's such an odd shape. I have at least a dozen bags that I could use on it, but due to the shape, none of them will strap down securely. I'm afraid all the rack will ever do is hold strapped-down jackets.

A HD tour pak rack is an easy install and accommodates most bags....

top case luggage rack

It appears that with the adjustable feet feature of this rack that it would easily fit
inside the antenna inside the top case lid. Best to take some extra time, make a template and check it out. It would not add more than 30 minutes to your install time...better than a lifetime of shame, leaks, poor radio reception, etc!:k16:

Has anyone purchased the silver (not the chrome) Wunderlich rack? If so, does it match the other "silver" on our bikes?
Thanks

I just finished the install of the Wunderlich luggage rack on my 2015 GTL-E. I can tell you the install is easy. If you want to separate the top case to ensure you miss the antenna, it adds about 20 minutes. All the screws to remove are within the inside of the case except 2, those are on the outside by the front of the case hinges - look up in the recess and you will see them there. In the process of removing the screws the brake light will be removed along with the passenger backrest. Then just close the trunk lid and lift off the top part of the case.
However, if you prefer to do it the quick way, just center the rack and move it as close to the rear of the passenger backrest as possible and you will miss the antenna. You can see in the JetJockey photo how it is positioned - just follow that as a guide. It does not have to touch the backrest - just within 1/4 inch or so.
If doing that makes you nervous, you could remove the case screws that hold the backrest only, lift the backrest - don't remove it - just so you can see the 2 most rearward holes. Then, from each rearward hole measure 12.5 cm towards the rear of the case - that is the inside edge of the antenna film that runs along the back edge of the case. Then measure 17 cm from each hole to its corresponding side of the case - that is the inside edge of the antenna film that runs along the sides of the case. Now, when you position your rack, make sure the feet are well within the "U" that is formed by those measurements. Drilling thru the top case from the top proved to be easiest for me once I confirmed I would miss the antenna. As you can see in earlier photos, the film forms a "U" that runs along the back edge of the case and both sides. Let me know if any questions and hope this helps any future install.

As an additional note, if you use the washer kit from RocketMoto, you will need to by longer bolts - 30mm worked perfect for me. I also purchased 4 rubber washers to sandwich between the top case halves where the luggage rack bolts down, but they were too thick. 3 squares of duct tape worked the best - that prevented the two halves from compressing together - probably not necessary but I did it anyway. I also added blue Loctite to the bolts - I didn't over tighten so I don't want them to loosen over time.

These instructions was very helpful!
Tanks a lot.

I am not using the Rocket Moto washers on this one (did use them on my GTL -12) because shipping to Sweden was too expensive. And I never load anything on the rack either. For me it is just practical styling, I use it as a handle when closing the lid.

Gunnert, could you please give us the HD part number of the tour pak rack you used, several of us are interested.
