Engine stops when I put the transmission in any gear

Bike started normal, until I put it in gear, then engine immediately stopped. Same if I start it and put it in second gear. Repeated several times.
Before calling for a tow truck, I decided to try engaging and disengaging the alarm. Bike started and functioned normally. Rode home, shut the bike down, tried to restart and same problem. In addition, When this problem is active the starter will not run with the bike in gear and clutch pulled in.
Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what is causing this?
2016 K1600; under warranty but I don't want to waste a day at the dealer if it is something simple?.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know about your dealer (and if its close), but mine would give me a loaner to ride while they are working on it... If the bike is in warranty, I'd just let them deal with it and enjoy the loaner, and let them earn some money from the Motherland.

Kickstand sensor? Check the connection at the sensor is the first place I'd look.

Engine stops when I put the transmission in any gear??

The two most common causes would be the the kickstand switch ( 2016 BMW K1600GTL. #61328526970: Switch, kickstand ) &/ or Clutch switch ( Clutch lever assembly, smoked glass. Fits: 2016 BMW K 1600 GTL | Hermys BMW eStore ). The fact that it starts without issue with a change in the alarm is unusal. Programing / CANBUS determination of cause (911 eval.)?? Looks like a BMW Roadside Assistance call may be in order?? Let us know what is the cause when you/ they figure it out. Best,

Doc

I was gonna ask it in that way but thought I'd just point him in that direction.

I had a rider meet me once to show me his bike that I was interested in. He couldn't get it to stay started after showing it to me and trying to pull off. For the life of him, he couldn't understand what was wrong with it. He finally said "I have no idea what is happening with this bike. It has never done that". I politely told him to check the kick stand. Embarrassed, he raised the stand, started it, put it in gear and rode off.

I didn't buy the R1 that day and am probably alive today because I didn't. My maturity level back then dictated that I didn't need it. Thank God a girl got in the way of my bike finances then!

Yes, but good question. I was able to ride it home and shut it down. Then it repeated the problem.

Ok; I'm guessing kick stand switch at least for now. I I wiggled it around and pushed it down just to see if it would make a difference. Now I cannot duplicate the problem. Prior to the problem, I was installing my short shifter. Maybe I upset the switch? Maybe just Murphy toying with me? Either way I cannot duplicate the problem.
My original guess was that I didn't firmly reattach the ignition harness after removing all the fairings. So, I checked and It was on tight so that's not it either. Guess I needed the practice taking all these plastic panels off again? ( Not so much!)
Thanks for the replies. I was not thinking in the direction of the kick stand switch. I will call the dealer tomorrow and see if they think a visit is warranted, assuming it doesn't happen again. Great forum!

Good information about the prior work being done.
In my career, 99% of electrical problems could be traced back to a prior repair or mod. I most always checked the history of repairs to see if anything might be related.
Glad you have got it sorted out.
Best.

And .......... make it formal, so the problem is logged, next time you are having a Service.

Here in the UK, it's usually salt/grit that corrodes the kick-stand switch internally, but sometimes it can just be road dirt or debris that holds the switch open. A clean up helps, but often replacement is the best option to ensure reliability.

My wife's Kawasaki drove us mad with this very issue - we ended up replacing both the clutch & kick-stand switches before sanity returned. The problem was always dificult to replicate as the switches worked 95% of the time, but then occasionally, the engine would just die - not fun if this happens in traffic. Pull into the kerb, set the bike on it's stand & away it would go again. Turned out both switches were corroded internally when I ripped them apart, although they looked perfectly OK from the outside. BMW have experienced the odd problem with switchgear in the past, mainly kill switch & wonder wheel, so I think it is worth the dealer checking this out idc.
