Replaced plugs at 36K miles

I did not replace the plugs at 18K, I waited until i had the 36k service done. The plugs look great, I was surprised, even the mechanic said they looked good.

So it worked for me and I saved some money.

I ride fast but don't push the bike really hard. never got more then 6k out of a set of tires and I keep the bike in "ROAD MODE" and don't really tach it way up very often.

The reason I waited was at $25 a plug I really think they should last longer then 18k miles.

When I bought the bike in for the 18K service the gas mileage was great and it idled fine and was running really smooth, when the plugs are going bad your fuel mileage starts to suffer and it will start to run ruff. I bought a set of plugs and was planning on changing them when I started to see a drop in performance but that never happened. I was getting 41mpg when I brought it in. That's what I always get.

Just thought id share.

My K16 is approximately my 50th motorcycle.

Thanks for posting this. I agree with your logic. Plugs every 18k, not for me.

62,000 miles, original plugs still in. I have not noticed any performance issues yet. I know I should probably change them out. At the 48,000 mile point, dealer had told me they were still good and leave them in.

I replaced my plugs over the winter. 49,400 km's (~30k miles). I didn't really need to do them. The next change won't be until about 150k

The plugs these days are awesome. Plugs in my Lexus went over 130K and were still fine when I decided to pull them. I know, plug comparison for an auto vs. a GT/GTL isn't quite the same, but still speaks to me.

As a follow up to my mentioning having 62,000 on the original plugs. I just got my bike back from dealer after having Wilbers installed. The dealer opted to change the plugs since they had the bike torn apart for the front shock installation, so I now have new plugs. He showed me the old plugs and there was some wear on them, but dealer said they could have lasted for some time and thought it best to take advantage of the opportunity to change them out. I agreed.

I forgot to mention, valves also checked. They were good. No adjustments needed.

At that price I assume we're talking about Iridium plugs?

100,000 miles or more is not out of the question. Just check your gap and deposits every 20,000 or 30,000 miles or so and keep going! This is one item that shouldn't be fretted over.

NBS: if you are going to the effort to check and regap the plugs you change them.
