Thanks RL! Starting Cheat Sheets today!! Started off with oil changes to the Kawasaki two years ago, and planning on doing some of the simpler stuff on the Beemer.

 

I just updated my cheat sheet yesterday, and it looks just like yours, except I include the Filter.

Oil Change

5 Quarts
Oil Sump Plug - 8mm Allen - New Crush Washer - 28 NM Torque
Crankcase Super Plug - 1/4” Socket Extension - 12 NM Torque
Oil Filter - Lubricate Seal - 11 NM Torque

Final Drive

180ml to 200 ml 75-90w Gear Oil
Drain Plug - T45 - 20 NM Torque
Refill Plug - T45 - 20 NM Torque

Tire Change

Front Brake Caliper - T-45 - 28 NM Torque
Pinch Bolts - T45 - 19 NM Torque
Wheel Axle - 50 NM Torque

Rear Wheel Bolts - T50 - 60 NM Torque

 

I did the same thing over the winter. I also scanned all of my maintenance records for all vehicles to my cloud account. Just in case I need to verify a service when traveling.

Thanks for the handy information on one page. I just copied and pasted to a word file and it printed just fine.

Your superplug is now installed. The mechanic at my dealership and the dealer himself were impressed with the finished quality. The dealer has had to disassemble at lelast one bike that had the crankcase plug's allen socket stripped out.

I'd invite K1600 owners to add additional info they deem helpful to one of these cheat sheets and print a few for their own toolbox. I must have three of four around my garage. Real helpful for that occasional bit of maintenance.

Torque Specs

Thanks for all the work, especially for us newbies! I seem unable to find the specs for the rear caliper. I've found them for the GS, but what are the K1600 torque specs for the rear caliper?

I am so thankful for this site. I am normally mechanically challenged but this forum is going to help me keep my new years resolution to overcome this weakness. I'm comfortable starting with oil changes based on the information here. However I don't own a torque wrench. Any suggestions for a reasonably priced torque wrench that will work for DIG applications on the K1600?

I had a couple standard torque wrenches but liked what RL is using so picked one up. Digital read-out in NM.

 

Sometimes you can find the 3/8" Delco torque adapter on eBay for a great price, as there is a wide spread of prices online.

Using the one I purchased for a few years now, I have to say that I remain pleased because it covers the range of torque values easily.

The key is figuring out the little multi-function buttons.

The two standard pancake batteries seem to last forever.

 

I've been happy with the Craftsman Digitork 3/8" Torque Wrench.

It covers all reasonable maintenance torque values on the bike, including the rear wheel bolts, and is easy to use with a simple physical torque readout in both foot-pounds and newton-meters. I've even carried it on long bike trips when I knew I was going to be changing tires out on the road.

Although it seems that Sears now sells the Digi-click model with a digital readout for more money.

I had the Digitork model and it finally gave up the ghost. Sears had a sale just before Christmas on the Digi-click with digital readout for @ 50% off so I jumped on that. Whew! That is one sweet torque wrench. Let's you know when your getting close with a light and then a different light just before you are right on the money. It will retain the reading for a few seconds so you can see what it was in case you can't read it while tightening. Definitely worth the money! At least at 50% off it was!

 

Where would one find nut/bolt torque specs for our bikes? For now, I am seeking the steering head nut on my K16GTL (under the roundel), but would also love to know where a complete list is for the bike.

The steering head nut, I believe, is 90Nm and it calls for thread locker (Loctite 2701).

RL made up a nice short list of torque specs.

 

When I have them printed, I send a Cheat Sheet with Super Plugs.
