Luggage choices - holy smokes!

As part of my accessory purchase planning, I've been evaluating luggage choices - specifically, case liners and a rack bag for the trunk box. The top choices seem to be BMW, Wunderlich, RKA, and Kathy's. I expect the BMW bags to be pricey. How does the quality vs price work out in reality? I just need something that I can fill with clothes or whatever and remove from the bike to carry inside a hotel, tent, etc. My current luggage standards range from a 5-11 bag I used in vet school to a Camelbak military bag to American Tourister soft sided suitcases. I'm not particularly picky, other than it needs to hold up.

BMW is good quality, but too $$$. I have RKA and they're built very well...they'll out live me. Kathy's are probably good, based on reviews of their products. The cheapies on Ebay are definitely not recommended...zippers are weak and failed on me. Occasionally, you'll find a quality used set available here on the forum.

BMWs are heavy, expensive and do fully use the GT/GTL case volume. Bought a 3 piece set of good quality flexible bags for the half the price of one BMW bag and they have served me well for about 75.000 km. BMW bag zipper failed after 1 year and there is no repair option.

99.99% of the time, I'm touring one up. I use a Touratech bag with my clothes packed in packing cubes for ease of use inside the motel. I use Rok Straps to fasten it to the rear seat. It serves as a bit of a back rest while on the road.

Kathy's Journey for the bag liners.

I'm still hunting for a good luggage bag setup, with no top box. I liked Duane's setup. Maybe he'll chime in.

I'm getting these for $65:

I've had Bestem inner bags on other bikes and liked their quality. These are supposed to be liners and not heavy duty travel luggage. Being lightweight, they tend to "fill" the panniers better and not leave wasted space. I don't use the panniers very much, and the inner bags even less often, so makes little sense to pay beaucoup bucks.

As for my Givi top case, I normally use it for holding my helmet and tank bag at rest stops, as well as misc. items I need quick storage and retrieval over the course of the ride (snack, water bottles, cleaning supplies, etc.). No need for liner bag.

As others have said, Kathy's and RKA make good quality liners at reasonable prices.

The BMW liners are nice, but heavy and expensive, and the Bestem are cheaper with just OK quality.

Note that the Bestem K1600 liners are currently on sale.

I've used all four of these brands in various bikes over the years. I don't have any experience with the Wunderlich liners so I can't comment there, but Wunderlich does tend to do quality stuff.

For anyone who's interested, RKA is having a Martin Luther King Day sale on Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd, with 20% off all RKA luggage and free ground shipping.

No website orders—you have to call them for the sale prices.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from . . .
