Radar Detectors

I have had limited experience with some radar detectors (Escort iX and Escort Max 360C) in my vehicles the past couple of years and I think they have served their purpose well, as I have managed to not have any tickets since acquiring the first one. I have never had one on any of my bikes and I'd like to change that when my new GTL arrives this next week. I've read the recent thread on the mounts and found an occasional mention of radar detectors in other threads, but I'd like to get a current idea of what you guys are running on your GTLs these days. That would include the type of detector, the mount and power setup, and other considerations I should know (such as...I don't think these things are weather resistant, so do you cover them when riding in rain, remove them, etc)?

Thanks,

Bernie

V1 in my car. Longest range and directional arrows, but not as high tech as newest, best Escorts.

I’m happy with the Adaptiv TPX Pro I have on my GT. I’d put it in the high-mid to low premium category, so not near the V1 or best Escort, but IT IS WEATHERPROOF, so no plastic baggies or taking it off when the rain hits, and that was huge for me.

TPX Adaptiv Radar Page

I have it on a RCU shelf above the NAV VI, and it has a remote LED flasher which I’ve mounted right in front of me. It uses only a small amount of juice, and since I have a Denali CanSmart for the big-draw items, I have the RD on a cheap but very functional INNOVV PowerHub 2, which is only for small-draw items.

Uniden is generally considered the King by many in RD's the last couple of years.

Mine is mounted on a magnetic ram plate. I used some double sided tape to attach a small steel plate to the bottom of the RD.

The ram magnetic plate is connected to an arm that is attached to the bike using an existing screw on the top of the dash, just left of the NAV.

Power comes from a cable connected directly to a 12V power source but it also has a button mounted on handle bars where I can mute the RD with my left thumb. I can't remember where I got that, but it is a great option to have.

The RD's sound is piped into a Sena SM10 that is linked to my Sena 20S. Also connected to the Sena SM10 is the bikes audio system by way of another mod. That way, I get music from the bike and RD sounds through the same bluetooth stream.

As for rain, I remove it once it gets very heavy. In light rain, with were mine is mounted, the windscreen keeps it dry.

I too have the Uniden, R1 model mounted with a RAM Magnetic RD mount. The RD audio alarm is sent to Sena 30K headset via Sena SR10. I've had the Uniden about 2 1/2 years. It's been replaced twice; once under warranty and once with me paying for it. Uniden has 'set repair rate', I think it was $79.00. Both failures were the same, 3.5 audio out plug quit working. If/when I get another RD it probably won't be a Uniden...

I’m using an Escort Max 360C mounted on an Adaptiv control mount and a Ram magnetic plate. I use a PDM 60 to supply power to all my electronics. I’ve purchased, but haven’t had an opportunity to mount, a Motochello and SM10 to Bluetooth RD alerts and rest of audio to my 20S headsets.

If you have an Escort Max 360 by all means use it. Its a great detector.

I have one mounted on a little shelf I build out of ABS that positions the detector directly above the GPS on the dash.

I tapped into the powerlet socket under the seat for power. Audio is handled by an Sena SM10 to my Sena 20s headset.

I add my vote for the Uniden.
I have the DFR6 mounted on the RAM magnetic mount attached to an RCU shelf.
Audio is pumped through the SM10. Power is off a switched lead from a PDM60.
What I like about the Uniden is that you can program it to display output voltage of your alternator...very handy.
Gets its fair share of false alarms triggered by automotive proximity detectors, more so in town. On the road it doesn't seem to be an issue. More of a minor annoyance than anything else.

I have a BEL RX65 on both bikes and both cars. I keep thinking about going to something else but they work very well but now out of production and are NOT water resistant. It it rains I either put a Baggie on it or remove it and slow down a bit. On my 1600 it's mounted above the dash using a Techmount (something I just had in stock) and Velcro or Ram Magnetic mount. Power is supplied via the EZ-Can and Audio is hardwired to a Sena SM10 and BT to my helmet.

The audio jack on my R1 died last weekend at TTW, so now I'm trying to decide whether to fix or replace. Yours failing a second time is concerning - too bad, otherwise its a great unit. If you were buying another RD today, what would you get?

So, do you think the audio jack failed due to too many connect/disconnect cycles? If so, would it make sense to use a short extender that stays plugged into the RD and absorbs the abuse? Perhaps the audio jack was designed more for a car where it would probably remained plugged in most of the time.
