Update: Went out today, upper 60's. Monitored temp on top of the battery, and the LEFT side pocket.
Peak temps were: Pocket: 100.9. Battery: 73.4
I was surprised at the low underseat temp, I expected it to be much higher. This included standing in heavy traffic for a while and parking for 30 minutes.
So, next recorder goes over the battery, and since I won't be needing the USB power, I may as well pull the radio and speakers to save some weight. (Can't hear it at over 30 MPH anyway.)

I keep a thumb drive with music connected on the right side. Never had a problem. I also store my toll booth transponder in there. Also, no issue.

The left pocket I keep power plug converters in, and iPhone lightning cables. The power cables never had a problem, but the white iPhone cable turned brown and cracked. I'm guessing heat. So, now I keep it in my tank bag.

Both pockets are right against the engine. Frankly, I'd like to see them higher up on the fairing.

I haven't measured the temp but have never experienced any problems with an iPod.
I bought the BMW cable that allows me to control the iPod with the wonderwheel. I've had temps that ranged into the upper 110s for weeks. The red lights here in Las Vegas are real long and the fan turns on at every stop and still the iPad just keep playing my music.

My iPod Nano has been in that pocket for 80,000 miles through all temps and weather.

No issues at all, except that it's kind of a pain to use the Scroll Wheel to move all the way down to ZZ Top . . .

I have thought about using the wireless connection cable to hook up my iPhone, now that I have a waterproof case for it.

Anyone have any comments on the Tune2Air, or some other bluetooth dongle that connects to the existing BMW wiring?

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full.
All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Am I missing something? My 12 GTL already has a USB socket built in the right oddments box. I use it to charge my phone and listen to music. :-/

I think he wants to add a USB socket to the left fairing pocket.

The right pocket already has one for music input and/or charging.

I like having the lower storage pockets, but with the heat issue I wish there was an aftermarket pair of pocket to replace the speakers, since I always use bluetooth to my helmet and they are just wasted space & weight. That would be a handy location for small stuff and much less heat issue. Not sure if they could be sized deep enough for a phone, but that would indeed be cool

The speaker pockets are plenty big enough for even today's massive smartphones.

The issue is coming up with a decent cover door that's easy to use, potentially lockable, and doesn't interfere with the handlebars at full lock.

Perhaps someone on the forum has the skills & tools to fabricate such a thing. The lock solenoid from the topcase is a possible way to integrate with central locking. I don't think an external key hole would be necessary if integrated with central locking, and a lock cylinder would take valuable space from the storage compartment. Maybe someone with a 3D printer can fabricate a drop-in replacement

I just realized I hijacked the original topic. Carry on

The locking solenoids are larger than a standard key lock, but it would be a nice option to have.

I've thought about converting the speakers to storage, but haven't yet worked out how to make the doors work.

Maybe it could be something as simple as a snap-on vinyl cover, like the old Vetter fairings . . .
