Improve the lighting in your garage

It is very easy to convert 4' florescent fixtures to LED and you will no longer have to replace bulbs or be bothers by a bad ballast. I did this in my old garage a few years ago and just did it again the new home we just moved into. All that I had to do was cut the power, remove the ballast and then make two connections to one side of the fixture. There are numerous YouTube videos on how to do it, but it was so easy that even I did each one in less than 5 minutes.

You do not even have to remove the fixture from the ceiling. Just take off the cover, slip off the middle cover protecting the ballast and snip snip... The LED bulbs were about $13.00 each and last about 50,000 hours ! Oh and it is much brighter in my garage. Home Depot even has one with a motion detector that I placed in the garage between the inside and outside garage doors. Opening either one turns it on.

Sam's Club has 4' LED replacement bulbs that ignore the ballast allowing for instant changeout. No wiring. I changed out my bulbs and tickled by the color, brightness and no-more-flicker.

I bought my LED replacements from Costco. In my two-car garage, the 18 tubes light it up like day light, and never even considered any changes in ballast wiring....

I got mine off Amazon.

As a retired journeyman electrician I was estactic about removing the ballasts and throwing them in the trash can. Mine were direct wire on one end of the fixture tombstones and done. They are fantastic light wise, best upgrade I've ever done for lighting in a garage.

Very timely post. My garage flourescent just went out. Changed the bulbs that I had on hand and still nothing. I was looking at the Big Ass Fans garage light but figured a little too spendy for LED upgrade, so I'll stop by the hardware store after work tomorrow.

I had an electrician do this for me a few years ago. I hired him to do some other work and added the garage while I had him here. Amazing difference and not a bulb has blown in over 3 years.

Good info. I'm always looking for more light in the garage/shop.

Ditto to direct replacement LED bulbs. I picked some up at Lowes a few weeks back I think they were about $2.50 per bulb more expensive than the replacement 4' fluorescent tubes. The difference in the light output is dramatic.

By removing the ballast and installing the LED bulbs will the static on my radio, that is present when the current bulbs are on, go away?
