The New PHAT 6 vs. THE PHAT 6

For those that do not already know:

  • THE PHAT 6: 2004 Honda Valkyrie Rune
  • The New PHAT 6: 2018 BMW K1600B

Well, since my ECU for the K1600B is in a package somewhere in route to BrenTuning for more power, I am getting in some more quality time with the original PHAT 6, the Rune. The differences between the two are significant. Both are awesome in their own ways. Figured I would capture these while riding on both bikes is fresh in my mind:

  • Almost everything on the Rune takes more effort than on the K1600B.
    • I am not saying either is better, just different.
    • The Rune takes more effort to pull in the clutch, the brakes, shifting, steering, throttle, but this also makes it feel more robust. One example: when you have chosen a line and are holding it through a corner, it may have taken you more effort to steer it there, but it is also more oblivious to road issues, crosswind, etc that threaten that line and your desired outcome.
  • The brakes are one of the biggest differences that matter.
    • The K1600B has linked brakes where the front and rear are linked on the front brake lever.
    • The Rune has linked brakes where the front and rear are linked on the rear brake pedal.
    • Important the meathead in the saddle is in the right "mode" for emergency stopping.
  • The clutch is also one of the biggest differences that matter.
    • The K1600B has clutchless shifting under most conditions.
    • The Rune does not.
    • Important the meathead in the saddle is in the right "mode" always when on the Rune if he uses any clutchless shifting on the K1600B!
  • Although the Rune is heavier, the K1600B is more top heavy. That low-slung, flat-6 keeps the center of gravity on the Rune low.
  • The feeling of riding each is awesome, but it is a different kind of awesome.
    • Rune: like riding a well mannered, well controlled, powerful, heavy bull--not much can knock it off its game and what you want it to do.
    • K1600B: like riding a well trained cheetah: fast maneuverable, responsive, but also more susceptible to "other stuff" going on and you have to pay closer attention.

Side-by-side (both stock seats suck!):

I do consider the Rune one of the most beautiful bikes ever made. So much so that I bought one years ago, but I dare not ever ride it.

Hey @phat6 , I got your PM and I'm LMFAO. I seriously didn't mean to mislead. Here's a better and recent pic of my Rune.

Ya, I did not notice it, but someone on the Rune board nailed you almost immediately: https://www.runeriders.com/forum/sho...l=1#post258979

Was out on the Rune this evening. Had my Cardo on. Rolled up over a hill on the off ramp, going west, and the sun was just setting behind Mount Charleston, with plenty of clouds in the sky. A nice, bright orange, multicolored sunset. I crested the hill and pulled to a stop at the light at the end of the off ramp. I got to take it all in, just as the next track started playing . . . the opening theme to 2001. What a cool moment.

It's still just a goldwing... Presonally I think the B looks better, but that might just be effect of the pink seat cover
