Drivetrain Failure

The K16GT performed perfectly during my 11 day ride around the U.S. However, on my return ride home, and after 10,000 miles, I noticed what sounded like pebbles in a bag being shaken when I pulled the clutch lever in and coasted to a stop. It didn't sound "right", but the noise wasn't present while riding. That changed 300 miles later when suddenly there was a horrible clanking noise from the rear end. Fortunately there was an exit offramp nearby. As I was slowing to enter a parking lot, the rear wheel seized.

I suspect the driveshaft or universal joint failed. I thought drivetrain issues were resolved with the K1600s? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember reading about a K16 driveshaft failure on the forum. My first thought is whether the driveshaft is removed and splines lubed during 18,000 mile services? If not, that would be a contributing factor to the failure.

Follow up question sir: How long did you have to wait for service?

There is thy gold, worse poison to men's souls,
Doing more murders in this loathsome world,
Than these poor compounds that thou mayst not sell.
I sell thee poison; thou hast sold me none.

If you are referring to tow service, the tow truck arrived an hour and a half after I placed the call with Progressive's roadside assistance. The failure occurred south of Atlanta in a fairly urban area.

If you are referring to the dealership service department. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. I won't know anything specific on the failure until Tuesday late morning.

Yes, tow service I was referring.

Yikes 1 1/2 hours in a random parking lot in urban Atlanta. That must have been terrifying. Kudos to you for surviving.

I agree, don't recall this issue reported on the forum over the years. Let us know what the dealer says the failure mechanism was/is. Thanks for posting.

Yeah not heard of this. Very scary - glad you are ok. Let us know what the issue was.

Had 2014 gtl premium spring 17 - winter 2019 (rode 25k miles). Bought used Wing to try out (10k miles), Nah-too boring and slow. Like GTL better, bought another GTL. Ha.

Not to be a fly in the ointment, but you said you had a pebble grinding/shaking sound when you pulled the clutch in, and you continued to ride 300 miles until catastrophic failure?

Fair enough comment. It was a Sunday morning, there were no dealerships open until Tuesday, the noise was not present when the clutch was engaged, and the K16 was riding fine. I evaluated my options and weighed the risks. I decided to press for home which was a short five hours away.
