Need help nav vi

I own a 2012 BMW K1600GT
That currently has a Factory installed Garmin Nav VI (4)
I just purchased a New Garmin NAV VI (6)
Can someone walk me through how to change it out?
I mean hold the hand of a dummy and start with...”put the key in the ignition”
I am not very mechanically inclined, but having scouring this forum 5-6 times a day,I can see that there is always someone that has already done anything that one might be considering and always someone that is willing to lay it out step by step on how to do it yourself.Thank you to everyone that makes thus one of the best forums I have ever belonged to

I believe that procedure is outlined in the manual.
But once the unit pops up, there is a lever/button behind the unit (R/S) that you can press with your finger. That will release the GPS. It comes out from the top.
Be aware that the shroud that covers the GPS is slightly smaller than the screen of your NAV VI so some of it may be obscured. Thats an easy conversion.

Good luck.

I do not know how the 2012 was mounted. Can you attach an image of the GPS installed and another with it removed? I want to see if the current cradle is correct for the newer GPS.

If you look at the image below, you see the GPS mounted in the dash. This is because there is a loading "hatch"/door that pops up from above when the windshield is raised. What does yours look like?

See this thread.

The BMW Navigator IV, V, and VI units will all fit in the factory GPS cradle position and allow use of the handlebar Scroll Wheel. Your '12 bike would have come with the older dash surround for the smaller Nav IV.

The Nav VI GPS will just drop into your existing GPS slot, and the Scroll Wheel will work just the same. It's faster to calculate, and sunlight readability is greatly improved.

The existing Nav IV Dash Bezel has a smaller opening, so it will block some of the Nav VI's larger screen.

BMW offers a few different replacement dash bezels for around $60, depending on your bike model.

The updated 46 63 8 382 723 Instrument Cover for Nav VI shows on the parts diagrams for GT, GTL, and B models. There's also an updated 46 63 8 382 724 GPS Cover Plate, but I never use mine.

2011-2016 models all use the above part number, while the 2017 GT/L has four color options, and the B has two color options.

The 2017-2018 bikes and all Baggers should already have this part fitted from the factory.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full.

To get the dash part that has the large opening for your Nav 6 purchase part # 2 from the above parts listing. As you will read on that page it is for the newer GT among other models and the Nav6 but it should fit your 2012 GT just fine. It would be wise to call them and ask for the dash that fits the Nav 6 to make sure you get the right one.

To install the Nav6 in your bike put the key in the ignition and turn the bike on. To the left of the GPS dash opening is a plastic button. Push it in hard. Your windshield should automatically raise up. A door on top of the dash should pop up a little. Grasp it and pull it up as far as it will go, it should click and stay up. If you still have the plastic plate with a 6 on it covering the window poke your finger down and behind it and give it a push it will pop out.

Insert your GPS by putting the bottom into the holding fingers and then rotate the top back into the top fingers until it clicks into place. Once locked in push the assembly back down into the dash until it clicks shut.

The GPS should come alive.

Some of us have had problems with the NAV VI battery and have had them replaced by Garmin under warranty. Does it show a full charge up in the right hand corner battery indicator? Sounds painfully obvious but possible. I assume you have the charging device for the NAV VI? Only other option I have tried before is doing a hard reset on the device by pressing and holding the on/off button on the back for several seconds. Garmin Tech phone number is 1 (888) 442-7646, mostly good experience with that.

UPDATE: A bunch of contact cleaner on the unit and the cradle has made it more reliable. If it doesn't fire up when the bike is powered on I take the unit out and hold power button until it starts, then I place it back in the cradle and it makes connection because the battery gets charged and I see all the bike telemetry. Thanks for the help! (oh, and the VI is super bright!)
