2019 Iron Butt Rally Megathread

And so the anticipation builds...

The official 2019 Iron Butt Rally webpage has gone live, with Daily Reports, written by IBR veteran John Harrison, and some pre-Rally photo & video links.

There is also an anonymized group Spotwalla page, where you can follow the riders as they traipse around the country chasing honor, glory, and just one more bonus...

Sadly, I've had to sit this one out, but I will be visiting the checkpoints and following along with the Daily Reports.

From Lisa Landry, Rally Master and IBR Mom extraordinaire:

We love spectators and the energy they bring to event, not to mention the
support offered to riders. We ask that you park away from the designated
rider area and be sure to leave space for riders to easily access the hotel
from the parking lot, especially as we get into penalty minutes.

Thanks and hope to see you soon!

All Start and Finish activities will be at:

Greenville Marriott
One Parkway East
Greenville, South Carolina 29615

CHECK IN WEEKEND
Saturday, June 15
Sunday, June 16

RALLY START
Monday, June 17
Motorcycle Impound 8am
Rally Start 10am

Note that riders will start arriving as soon as Wednesday, in order to finish those last few items and have some precious down time before the madness starts.

Both checkpoints will be at:

Hilton Garden Inn Tri-Cities Kennewick
701 North Young Street
Kennewick, Washington, 99336

CHECKPOINT 1 INFORMATION
Thursday, June 20, 8pm

CHECKPOINT 2 INFORMATION
Sunday, June 23, 8pm

Note that 8 PM is the start of penalty points, so riders will be arriving all day long to get an early start on scoring and necessary bike maintenance.

FINISH - Friday, June 28, 10 am
Finishers' Banquet 6:30pm - Sold Out

As Lisa has said, spectators are welcome, but do be respectful to the riders. They're on a tight schedule, and likely quite stressed out. If you are mechanically inclined and wish to offer assistance with tire changes and basic maintenance that can be appreciated, but again, be respectful to the riders.

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full.
All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Looked at the pics. Looks like at least one person is running a car tire - so I guess that passes tech?

Also, these people need to get off those bikes and into a fitness routine. Wow.

Good luck to all- be safe!

Had 2014 gtl premium spring 17 - winter 2019 (rode 25k miles). Bought used Wing to try out (10k miles), Nah-too boring and slow. Like GTL better, bought another GTL. Ha.

Thanks for posting this. I hadn't checked on when it was being held and thought it would be in August so now knowing I'll definitely follow along. The past years reading the daily posts was something to look forward to.

I look forward to the dude on the Sportster's stories... L O L - He better have a chiropractor on standby or one following along in a support vehicle or maybe he is a chiropractor and will be self-administering adjustments along the way

Car tires are acceptable in the IBR, but run flat tires must have an onboard tire pressure monitoring system.

There are literally millions of miles on car tires without incident. I should know, as I've put on 100,000 of those my self, including 25,000 over two IBRs...

And that's not a fitness issue—they're just carb loading, like all extreme endurance athletes do.

Wise, but still quite disappointing.

I'm 2,800 miles from the start, and I still couldn't sleep last night...

Brett Donahue rode a Sportster to a Gold finish in the 2005 IBR. Note that he owned a Harley dealership, so he had excellent technical support. But it can be done.

And I have had my Rally bike vetted by my chiropractor. I took her out into the parking lot, she suggested a few ergonomic changes, and I made them. She also met me at Bill Mayer Saddles so that we could get the seat just right. It's now more comfortable than my office chair at work. Because it matters, especially over 11 long days in the saddle...
