Equifax Data Breach Claims Info

Iíve been following the Equifax data breach fallout for quite some time now, and thought the latest info below might interest some of you. If you believe your personal data was compromised or were a victim of identity theft as a result of the 2017 Equifax data breach, you might want to read either of these links and consider filing a claim after evaluating your personal experience.

This is the result of the settlement finalized between Equifax and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) within the past few days. Inputing your last name and last 6 of your SSN on the claims site will indicate whether or not your personal information was compromised, even if you didnít experience identity theft as a result of the breach. The claims site is operated by the Settlement Administrator, not by Equifax. Payouts would begin once a federal court approves the settlement and the Settlement Administrator approves the claims.

I opted for the simple $125 payout with a prepaid card, rather than cash, since I already use a credit monitoring service.

YMMV.

Ron, thanks for the info.
Only my wife was eligible for the 125. My data is supposedly safe.
Best.

Darryl - Thanks for all you do!

$125. The payout is crap. I'm sure the lawyers made out like bandits.

Many companies and tons of government agencies are still not performing their due diligence at a satisfactory level. Heck, many agencies are still getting hit with ransomware and making payouts when simply having proper endpoint protection would protect them against it.

The payouts and fines need to be prohibitive. We need a GDPR for the good ole US of A. Every other 1st world country is way ahead of us in protecting consumers. But we know why that is.

Thanks for posting. Good reminder.

My understanding is that it is "max of $125" If lots of people claim the cash, the payout will be lower per person. I'm torn as to which to do. The monitoring adds insurance if there is a breach, but Experian is owned by Equifax, at least in part or same parent company. So you are trusting the monitoring to same larger organization that already leaked it...

I suspect there is more value to me and cost to them by choosing the monitoring. And yes, they got both my wife and I.

I read today that the amount Equifax has is 31 million for the settlement. That means the more people file for the $125, the less and less each person will get. If each person who is eligible for the $125 files for it, we will all be getting a check for $0.16

Ding, ding, ding, for the win! I just received a email, saying the response has been huge to this, and that people can expect quite a bit less then the $125. So, it might end up $1.25 instead of $125.00.
