Improving throttle response

Been riding BMW K bikes for about 20 years, first the K12 bricks and then the new K16's. One thing that that drives me nuts is the difference in throttle response old technology to new. These days I have a 2018 K16B and a 2003 K12RS. Going from one to the other I feel a significant response difference, even when I drive the new one in "dynamic" mode. The new one is just not as "crisp" meaning that you need to crank it considerably more to get the same increment in engine output.. To me, this seems sloppy. Passing a truck on the highway with the old K took just a slight throttle movement, with the K16B it could be half a turn!

I know we all can get adapted to pretty much anything, and we do so I guess this falls under the heading of a "pet peeve". Any idea if the BMW software updates folks are talking about address throttle response?

if you have a GS911 resetting the throttle might be the first step, or you might be ingenious and tell the unit, 3/4 is actually full throttle

Improving throttle response

Your concern has been an issue since the release of the 2017 K1600's. BMW Motorrad Dealers are aware of the issue.

No, BMW has no intention of improving the throttle response of the new K1600's.

Yes, there is a solution. You can find it here:

Thanks for all the input... Honestly, I was not aware of Brentuning and this whole issue..thought it was just me! Anyway, this looks to be money well spent. Also as just and editorial comment, for the life of me I cannot understand why manufacturers do this sort of thing; probably warranty and insurance related... Had a similar issue with a Ram 1500 with the EcoDiesel; guys were spending big bucks (like 3X this number) to get their ECM's flashed in order to get their trucks to run right and longer!

@jtalka , if you read the other posts you'll see this change was to meet the new EU emissions requirements.

Simple answer: Emissions. Manufacturers are always trying to meet the ever changing emissions standards. To save the planet. *We have less than 12 years.

I had two 1600 GTs, and the ride by wire on them was not good at all. I’ve owned several bikes with RBW that work very well, including another BMW. In fact I’ve ridden three toally different BMWs with it that worked very well. For some reason BMW has never seen fit to fix some known issues with the 1600. That is just one of them.

And while it may be true that its the reason the newer 1600s are that way, the new regulations should have nothing to do with it. It just means they took the easy way out. I’ve ridden two 2018 & 2019 BMW boxers that have very good throttle response.

Euro 4 and the upcoming Euro 5 standards are what has caused the lagging throttle response.

As pointed out a tune can fix it and a clever tuner can adjust the throttle curve.

I have the Bren tune. It is a big improvement over the stock throttle. The response is better however I still feel some lag which should not be there. The other downside is if you let the dealer do a software update you can lose the Bren tune. I have told my dealer not to do any software updates until I ask for them. I feel that my 2013 throttle response was slightly better than my 2018 with the Bren tune. Anyone else feel that way ?
