Lighting ceremony at Mt. Rushmore. Yes it has been a nice day and you have been walking around in shirt sleeves. Take your jacket to the ceremony. Halfway through the sun goes down and it chills quick. By the time you walk back to the bike to get it during the middle of the ceremony it is over. Rain is likely on any given day.

At night regardless of the posted speed limits, I never drive faster than 50 mph and if no cars are coming I drive right down the center-line. The deer and turkey need to be culled and there are way too many. Here again if the locals are going faster and want a new hood ornament fine, I don't. Also be prepared for wildlife on or near the roads in the daytime, too.

I'll be going back up to see family and friends the end of July and probably some of August. No incentive after the Salt Lake rally to come back into the Arizona furnace. I hope you have a good ride, take your time and enjoy the scenery.

Skip the wildlife loop between Needles and Iron Mountain Road unless it is early or late in the day you won't see anything. The tunnels on Iron Mountain Road frame Mt. Rushmore which is why I suggested starting from the Hill City side. Use the horn going into the tunnels to give a heads up to somebody on the other side. Note: Your wife looks at the view and takes the pictures, there are sharp turns at the end of the tunnels and if you go straight ahead it will be a very bad day. Look where you want to go it will save grief.

The prettiest and most challenging will be Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. Start from Hill City, you can stop for free wine tasting at the Prairie Berry winery (the others in the area are a waste of time) on the north side if you are so inclined. Leaving the south side of Hill City people make the mistake of turning at the first light toward Mt. Rushmore, don't, drive a couple of hundred yards farther and there is another turn to Slyvan Lake for the start of the Needles. There are sharp 5 mph switchbacks, ascending, descending corners, and invariably a tourist doing an emergency no warning stop in the middle to see the chipmunk. Stay on the right hand side of the road these idiots are scared of the edge and will drive down the middle or on your side. While in the hills area turn on your bright light and any other auxiliary lights you may have along with keeping your thumb covering the horn button. Your object is to be seen and if that is annoying to some people, good.

Grew up in Rapid City and been back every year. I-90 from Sioux Falls to Rapid is boring but the quickest. Stop at Wall Drug plan to spend a few hours while your wife shops. Yes it is campy but the tourist trinkets are usually cheaper and better quality than in the Hills area. I like the buffalo burgers and the especially the donuts. Find the "green map," legal size paper and obviously green, available at most gas stations, restaurants, hotels, etc. This is the only map you will need of the Black Hills and surrounding area. Take more than one to write on, wrinkle, lose, etc. The color coding is fairly accurate. This is tourist season and local budgets depend on writing paper, motorcycles are a prime target. I don't care what the locals are doing or how many bikers have passed you it is safer to follow the speed limit signs especially in (strictly enforced) Spearfish Canyon. The yellow speed caution signs are accurate for people not familiar with the roads in the Black Hills.
