Hello folks,

It's bad weather outside and my K16 GTL is in hibernation.
So I want to use the time and do some conversion work:

1. Replacing the stock mufflers with the Akra mufflers

2. Black powder coated rims

3. Installing the Wunderlich frame cover after painting black

4. Top case plastic cover (for additional brake light) painted black

5. Paint the handlebar bridge and clamp block black

What would you like to rebuild or change on your bikes?
Looking forward to interesting ideas and pictures!

Underway starting this evening. I'll do a little at a time after working hours. No rush. Starting with the rear of the bike.

Radianz license plate frame lights
Skene IQ-260
Innovv K3 Dash Cam
Clearwater Betsy Running Light
Schreodie White/Yellow badge lights

Started by removing the amp and starting the bike. No visible errors. (Might have thrown codes, but I didn't check.)
Using 3M double lock tape for mounting components.
Adjusted the exCAN settings for my new configuration. (Mostly AUX setting, as it won't be controlling the rear lights.)

I didn't go out and check the odometer, but my "Connected App" tells me i have 6,808 miles. The rear could go a bit more but it's really time to change it out. The front is actually in pretty good shape, enough tread to go another 3,000 miles for sure, but I plan to change them both out before the spring riding season starts. My dealer sold me on Dunlop 4 Elites. I always rode Metzlers on my Honda VTX and they were not recommended. I never had any trouble with them, but we will see how the Dunlops perform.

Greetings,

Unfortunately, I have to tolerate quite a bit to live in Southern California (please don't get me started).

I would absolutely love living in Northern California for the opportunity it gives for cool summers, riding, hiking, backpacking, etc! But am unsure on some things!
Good to hear. @Gunnert scared me with his 4K mile tires. :) Glad to hear you’re close to 7K. I’m at 6K and rear tread looks good, but not sure if I want to wait another 1-2K miles to change it out.
I have almost 7K on my Roadsmart 3's. about to put new ones on!

After the joy of 3 new tyres in the last few days, a front brake rebuild is now on the cards looking at the calipers. I ordered the BMW re-build kits which just arrived, but wondered now if there are any ceramic piston versions to avoid the rust? Motorworks here in the UK said that the rear is ceramic pistons but BMW only does metal for the front.

I'm hoping you mistyped "...dealer sold me on Dunlop 4 Elites." And he meant to say "Dunlop RoadSmart 4". Dunlop doesn't offer an Elite to fit the K1600....

Winter projects complete:

Radianz license plate frame lights
Skene IQ-260
Innovv K3 Dash Cam
Clearwater Betsy Running Light
Schreodie White/Yellow badge lights

Program note: I decided not to use the Skene, instead I dedicated one circuit of the ezCAN for the brake light only.

Radiantz frame and Innovv camera mounted on frame bolt. All wiring for the plate and the camera uses the same route as the stock frame light, which is behind the plate.

Considering.....
  1. Upgrading the brake and indicator lights I have on my side cases.
  2. Installing Amber covers on the stock aux/fog lights
  3. Maybe incorporating an indicator repeater into the mirrors.
  4. Adding additional lights inside the top case that actually throw some light when the lid is open.
And I'm sure, whilst I'm doing those, other things may spring to mind.
So..... Thought I'd come back here and update...

  1. Decided against this, the mods I've already made work well.
  2. Done
  3. This took a bit of thought but I'm pleased with the result, although it did require a leap of faith to drill the mirror housing.

  4. Done,.. Just tapped into the existing light. Also added additional brake lights to the top case as well.

So that's it for winter projects. Time to ride!

these mods are done:

Replacing the stock mufflers with the Akra mufflers
Black powder coated rims
Top case plastic cover (for additional brake light) painted black

only the "small ones" are still open:

Installing the Wunderlich frame cover after painting black
Paint handlebar bridge and clamp block black

and then something new, otherwise it would be boring 😉

running light function for OEM topcase brake light with flash light option
chrome badge holders on the side panels are black (foil or spray foil)
Change all BMW emblems from blue/white to black/white or black/black

here is a first look 🖐
