I find that long days of riding require me to bring packages of electrolytes to add to water, or I will get cramping in my feet. As doctors keep telling us, everyone is different, and as such finding the right electrolyte product has been a challenge.

I always keep some PROPEL powder in my side case. One packet in a 16-20 oz bottle of cold water and shake. Sugar-free too. They are very small, about this size of a cigarette.

My cranky old Granny used to say to me "It's h*ll getting old, Johnny". I can still hear her voice. Wow, was she so right.

Dehydration is one of those I have to consider as I will cramp up as well. I won't be doing any long touring this year, but I'll be on the lookout for hydration ideas in the future. We used to drop ice and tablets in our Camelbaks when riding mountain bikes. Maybe start with something that simple.

Drip-Drop is a good product if you are looking for an electrolyte replacement. Lots of units across the Army provide it to their Soldiers. You can get it on Amazon or through their website.

Sports drink mixed 50/50 water. Electrolytes and sodium will help keep the liquid in your body compared to water only running through you. Dehydration takes about three days to re-hydrate. Hit it almost perfectly on a BBG.

Stephen V got it right... pickle juice will knock a cramp down very quickly.

OTOH, to hydrate properly, if on the road and in need, get some Pedialyte at the local pharmacy. It is a mix of electrolytes that will treat you good.

Avoid sugar drinks.

Get some pedialyte. Its originally made for rehydrating children but they sell it now flavored and as a competitor to gatorade. Its full of electrolytes, 3x as many as gatorade, and doesnt have all the sugar added to it. I use it for hot days on the MSF range and it works great.

On my IBR run riding in temps near 100 for days on end I used Medilite tablets, no cramps not signs of dehydration. I drank a lot of water and popped a couple of tablets in a bottle of water and drank it over the course of an hour, every few hours until sundown along with sipping from my hydration system which was plain water.

An additional bonus, with the aerostich darrien jacket, you can open the large breast pockets and put a bottle of cold water in each side. Makes the water access easy while riding and does an amazing job of keeping you cool too.

I have the same problem. Sports drinks like Gatorade helps a little but I still cramp up and pickle juice is too acidic for me.

What I have found that works really well for me is...............coconut water!

I‘ve been told coconut water was even used intravenously back in the day.

Bottom line, I’m sold.

I don't cramp, but I do find I lose sharpness and focus. Plenty of water on the bike and usually grab a sports drink or 2 throughout the day when it's hot.

My grandmother made us kids drink it. Came in dead second after cod fish liver oil. As much as I like natural stuff now this awakes the ghosts of the past.....
