Front brake pad replacement - transfer the shims?

265 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Synt
Hello folks,
I hope this doesn't sound too much like a foolish question, but when replacing the OEM pads with EBC pads, are we supposed to transfer those thin OEM shims from the old pads to the new? I would assume so, but when I looked at the part schematic on the MAX BMW site, it doesn't show the shims as a separate part. I did watch this video though from James Truxal where he shows that he does in fact transfer the shims to the new pads. Thanks in advance for your help!

I've never transferred the backing plate from one pad to another.

Duane @Gunnert ...do you use any kind of anti-squeal lubricant on the backs of the new pads? I don't know if that is the reason for the shims on the OEM pads or not (to keep them from squealing?).
Nope, no, never used anti-squeal lube on bike pads.

OK...thanks for your help, @Gunnert ! I appreciate it. I've changed the rear pads in the past, but this was my first time with the fronts and didn't want to do anything wrong.

I always reuse them on newer pads, also put some cooper grease between the shims, pads and the pistons.
Enjoy bricos!
