Front Doubledark options...

Yes, I know, another tire thread, use the search (I did), etc, etc.

Current tire is a Michelin Pilot 4 and is about done. Not sure on mileage on it since it was on the bike when I go it (was told it was "newish"), but I have put a little over 1500 miles on it and needs replacement. Looked good before the start of my trip, and will get me home.

Looking to go double dark (205/50/17 Hankook Ventus V2 on rear now).

First, seems most go to a 130/70/17 due to availability of rear tires in this size. I have read a post or two about needing to move the front fender up a bit to keep the tire from rubbing at speed, but again, only 1-2 posts about it. Is it just some tires that do it, or all 130/70/17?

As for which tire, reading here seems Avon Storm 3DXM tires were popular, but no longer available. Some have mentioned the Avon Roadrider Mk II as a possible replacement, but no real feedback on it.
No other real front runner for a double dark front that I can find.

I know on the Goldwing forums, the BattleAx BT45 was a popular option (has been replaced by BT46), but is a H rated tire (not that I plan on doing over 130 MPH). Did not see anyone use one here (but some here complained of poor wet tire traction with standard front/rear combo Battleax BT45).

Also reading a lot of good about the regular front 120/70/17 Dunlop Roadsmart 4. Seems some are getting close to 10,000 miles out of it.

Any suggestions?
I am leaning toward trying the Battleax due to its longer life (on Goldwings at least), but also thinking maybe the Dunlop RS4 could work for me.

I am hard on tires.
I am a fat guy, and my one up weight is most peoples 2 up weight (yes, I am working on it), and I like the throttle.
While I live a flat and straight area, I do take trips to the twisties.

Keep us posted on your progress on the tires and sizes you end up with. I'm in the same boat as I'm looking for more miieage than the 3,500 average we get on the rear and about 4K on the front. It would be much easier if Dunlop made the RS 4's in the 130 size. Not sure on who has the best selection for the 130's but Revzilla has a half dozen or so.

Good Luck

You can darkside and get at least 15,000 miles out of the rear, on a tire that will cost less than $100, or double darkside and get the same or better from the front.

And no, you won't crash and burn because you're on darksided tires ... and that's my opinion, not a legal guarantee.

You can pm me if you want for additional details.

Mounting car tires on a K1600 is akin to neutering a Porsche 911 with BFG All-Terrain tires.. :)

All 130/70/17a. Moving the fender up isn't practical so just wait for the tire to wear through. I used some kydex(sp?), an inexpensive shapeable thermo plastic, cut and shaped it to fit over the worn area with maybe a 1/4in gap between, and then epoxied it in place. Unless you know what to look for, it's hard to spot.

I use the Avon Roadrider Mk II, and have had excellent mileage out of it ... wish I could tell you how much but it's been that long ago that I changed it. However, the snakey groove at tire center, the one that's supposed to reduce tracking, well, on grooved pavement, you'll feel a lot of tracking.

The BT46 is bias-ply, but maybe that makes no difference in this application. That's probably why the speed rating is lower. What about maybe getting a trailer tire or something like that? Maybe the front wheel could be changed out to a nice chrome/steel unit to fit a budget trailer tire that could last a long time.
Any leads on a trailer tire that would fit the front?

So ended up getting the Bridgestone Battlax BT46 in 130/70/17.

Pulled the wheel off and found a local shop that did the swap for $30.

There is a jack stand under the towel, just FYI

I had it mounted standard rotation.
I know the arguments for running it reverse, but with the way the tread design is, I think it will channel water better running the "correct" way.

Now to get used to the different steering. Feels very stiff and heavy vs the very worn old tire.
Just over 65,100 on the bike, so will see how long it lasts.

Hey man, I know I'm late to the party, but I run a Toyo 195/60-17 all season on rear and Pirelli Demon 130/70-17 on front. Arrows correct rotation. I did raise fender about 1/4" because it did rub. Have not gotten more than 10K rear and 7K front with any MC tire. Like handling of Darkside. I have aftermarket coils as well, they work fine as good as OEM in my opinion. about 66K on the clock. The new Pirelli Demon improved handling big time compared to worn out PR4. Diesel truck oil in the case.

How do you like the Toyo? I assume you run it without a spacer? Also if you have a caliper I'd love a max width measurement. =)
