JohnS1955, Thomas and I will be attempting to do an IBA 50CC Quest (coast to coast in 50 hours or less) ride from Carlsbad, CA to Jacksonville, FL starting at O-Dark 30 Saturday April 29th. The 3 of us have done the SS1000 and last year the BB1500 on our way to the TTD so this seems to be the next thing on our list. Afterwards we will ride up to the TTD.

Below is the link to our Spotwalla mapping of the ride. It won't go live until the morning of April 29th but then will track our ride in real time. There will be 2 tracks laid out on the map. One from my SPOT unit and the other using the SWTracker app on my iPhone. The thought of 2 days of 1,200 miles each is a little daunting right now but we are ready to give it a try. Wish us luck.

Jim, the 3 of us have done too much planning to not be successful. If we can avoid tornadoes, biblical rains or whatever other nasty event nature might throw at us, we've got this.

It will definitely take what we've done previously to a new level. It's daunting and exhilarating at the same. Our official countdown has started. (y)

Cheering you all on from KC. Have to agree with John; you’ve planned the ride and you’ll ride the plan. You’ve done it in your head enough that now it will come to be. The challenges, when not mechanical, will likely be the elements. Mother Nature laughs when you tell her your plans. Still, you three are collectively stubborn enough to find a way through. Wish I was able to join!

John and Tom did a lot of work with the game plan for this trip. John has mapped out gas stops along the way and verified they were open 24 hours a day. We won't have to think about where our next gas stop will be or how far we need to go. They are spaced to accommodate interstate highway speeds and the corresponding fuel mileage. Tom made motel reservations in Kerrville, TX for the first night and in Jacksonville, FL for the end. We will stay there 2 nights so as to be refreshed for the 517 mile trip to the TTD on Tuesday. I've been testing the Spotwalla mapping system for a couple weeks now and feel that I've got it figured out. We've read posts on the Iron Butt web site and I've talked to one of the IBA Premier certification team advisors for Spotwalla tips.

All 3 of us have done extensive preparations to our motorcycles which includes, among other things, plenty of add on lights, new tires and fresh service. We have bike to bike communication worked out.

I'll be riding to San Clemente, where my son lives, on Wednesday. Friday I'll drop down to Carlsbad where Tom lives and where John will be staying at a family condo. We will meet at the first gas station for our start receipt on Saturday and between 05:00 and 05:30 kick stands up. We probably won't have time to do any ride reporting during the trip but will post up some experiences at the end.

Good luck.
Be smart.
One of the things I've learned in competing in distance/endurance events is: "Stopping is a good thing".

I believe Kerrville was my stop last year. After San Antonio, gas stops will be no problem. Like I say, I’ll be thinkin boutcha!

Sounds like fun! I'll be following your progress as I heal up from hernia surgery...I did sneak in an in-state SS1000 here in Colorado as part of the Tour of Honor a couple days prior to my surgery. I'm hoping to take my brother-in-law out on his first SS1000 once I get clearance from the doc.

Ride safe!

When I first saw the thread title it reminded me of the bike I had in school, and I thought NFW.

Have fun - best of luck.

I'll bet you wish you had that bike again for garage art. My first bike was a Honda 90 that my future wife lent me the money for. She is still lends me money for motorcycles.

It’s looking like we’ll be riding in 100+ degree temps for a good chunk of the first day. That makes Mesh wear tempting, but it’s going to be cooler east of Texas.

Decisions……

Yuma AZ is showing 102 degrees next Saturday. That’s the exit point. It isn’t going to get much better. 😃
