Lane-filtering bill introduced in Virginia--Contact your delegates today

From the AMA...

State Delegate Tony Wilt (R-26th) has introduced a bill that would allow lane filtering in Virginia under certain conditions. H.B. 1236 allows a motorcyclist to move between traffic that is stopped or moving at 10 mph or slower as long as the motorcyclist is on a road with two or more lanes in each direction, the motorcyclist does not exceed 20 mph while filtering, and the maneuver can be performed safely.

Wilt's H.B. 1236 has bill has been referred to the Committee on Transportation Subcommittee on Motor Vehicles.

This is the first time a lane filtering bill has been introduced in Virginia, so it is critical for legislators to hear from motorcyclists about the practice and why it makes riding safer and reduces congestion for other road users.

Send your state delegate a message urging them to supporting H.B. 1236!

I guess that when a car hits the motorcyclist, the motorcyclist is SOL according to the bill language :

“and the maneuver can be performed safely.”
Wonder if it will remove the 25 years ago "reckless driving" citation I received while idling through traffic in 1st gear on my K75? That trooper was literally foaming at the mouth while yelling at me about how I was no longer on "the LEFT coast" (CA tag on the bike), that I was "on the RIGHT coast", and about how "we do things differently out here..."

It must have been the slowest reckless citation in history.

Wow - this seem incredible to me as a UK Rider.

Why on earth would you ride a motorbike and still sit in traffic jams? I hope they introduce this for you soon!

It won't matter if they pass it or not. People in this country have become so spring loaded to take offense, especially while driving, that any motorcyclist that tries to filter through stopped traffic will likely be subjected to some bad behavior by the cage drivers. :frown:

You guys don't know how lucky you are that it's engrained in your driving culture in California and UK.

Like California used to be (thanks @StephenV) , Ontario -- you know, the 51st state, lane filtering is neither illegal or legal. In Ontario it is frowned upon but a cop has to really not like what you are up to because in order to make the charge stick they would have to cite you with something else. Lane Filtering is supposedly going into a trial period in toronto but we haven't seen any action on that yet. We share lanes all the time without even thinking about it as we pass snowplows, tractors, etc even when there is a double yellow line. I have seen the OPP do it. Anyhow, I am just happy that motorcycles now have access to the HOV lane. Good luck with the lane filtering bill.
Lane filtering in Louisiana is not legal. I see the advantage of it both physically for the rider on hot days and for the bike mechanical. I usually use the shoulder to move past stopped traffic as i do not trust drivers in automobiles to react kindly to lane splitting legal or not.
Do the riders in Va see an issue with automobile drivers not reacting properly in regards to the safety of the biker and becoming a protectionist and pinching off the lane

Yup. I can see myself filtering between cars going slow and methodical, because that is how I would do it. Then I would have someone see me in their mirror a few cars up simply move over enough to pinch me off. Then I have to remember I'm on a bike and at a big disadvantage in that argument.

Only time I would filter is if there is an accident and traffic is really slow/stopped on the highways. I've had to do it a few times in the hot summer so I didn't pass out. Would be nice if it's not illegal.

It's Illegal in Missouri, too, but, like you, I've risked a ticket and taken the shoulder rather that sitting behind a mile of standstill traffic and watching my temp gauge go into the red.
Just done a quick comparison between UK and USA stated carriageway widths (normal), which from online sources say about 12 feet per lane. Some of my route feels much narrower, Google Earth shows about 11 feet per lane with lots of vans and cars all bored and hardly moving, they drift quite a bit. Boxes and Mirrors makes it not fun
Boxes and Mirrors makes it not fun
I used to find the low-set mirrors on the Honda ST1100 and 1300 made it much easier to judge gaps when filtering as they were like a cat's whiskers: if the mirrors went through the gap then so would the boxes. However...

When filtering on the K1600 I find that if I switch on the aux fog lamps to complement the DRL's, then traffic parts a bit like the Red Sea  If I’m still finding some drivers to be a bit obstinate, switching on the hazard flashers as well generally does the trick.

I had a drill instructor like that in '71! He!! might have been him.

No matter... Somehow my insurance company never caught wind of it... It really was quite the kangaroo court. First thing the judge says to everyone present for traffic court that morning was "Listen up everyone. I have a plane to catch and I am in a hurry. Those of you who want to plead 'Guilty' will receive the lowest fine available. Those of you who want to plead 'Not Guilty' will be scheduled for trial when I come back. Believe me, you do not want to go to trial."

It is no longer not illegal in California. They codified it (and therefore regulated it) a couple years ago.

Ha... Nahhh... This dude was still wet behid the ears (in '95). Likely his fist "big bust" after being set out on his own.

Thanks, I didn't know that.:tb It was never explicitly illegal in california, it had no status (same as ontario), the new code makes it legal.
Here in Michigan, we have angry, aggressive, inconsiderate, rude, distracted, and clueless drivers. Lane filtering would be met with fenders, fingers, and bullets.

Voters would never vote this in here.

Apparently, it's all about "winning" the commute at any expense.

I despise humans in boxes with control over my safety.

Aren't double negatives fun. I was ready to jump on here and post my experiences over the last couple of years with lane splitting in CA and that was legal (I was followed by a CHiPs for about 15 miles lane splitting on the 5). So no longer not illegal makes it legal, right? >:)
