Lots of questions about music/media

I'm new to the BMW world, I just bought a used 2022 GTL. I'm still trying to learn everything. I've figured out how to play the radio through my Sena Bluetooth headset. I'm trying to figure out how to play media. I know I can play media through my phone but it's problematic when using the BMW app and Nav. I have a memory stick that I tried plugging into the USB port un the phone compartment but that didn't work. Any ideas? Also is there anyway to control volume with the wonder wheel? Controlling volume with the Sena is a pain, and is too loud for music and not loud enough for nav. Is there any solution for this?

  • You can control the volume of your Sena with the wonder wheel by connecting the helmet to the bike and phone to the bike rather than direct phone to helmet.
  • For playing media, once the phone is paired to the bike, start playing audio through the app of your choice on the phone and it'll show up in the media section on the bike. It's pretty straightforward. From what I see here, the iphone users seem to have a bit of trouble, but android seems to connect and play without much fuss. There are hundreds if not thousands of comments discussing the topic on this forum.
  • The gen 3 doesn't have a way to connect physical media, it's all wireless now.

Thanks for the reply. The helmet (Sena) is connected directly to the bike, there is no direct connection from the helmet to the phone. Unfortunately I still can't control volume with the wheel. The bike's firmware is up to date.

Is there any way to play music (media) from a memory stick instead of from the phone?

Definitely no way to use the thumb drive, the only input is bluetooth. The way you're describing your setup, the wheel should be working volume. When you're in media mode on the bike, and you hit play on the music in that mode, make sure you then hit backwards on the wonderwheel to get back to the main audio screen. The volume will not work if your not on the main audio screen that shows what you're playing fully displayed on the screen. Hope that makes sense.

I tried using the Wonder Wheel for both radio, and media. Unfortunately the Wonder Wheel does not work the volume with either. I tried in every scenario possible. For example when I was playing from media, I tried to Wonder Wheel in that media screen, then I tried going up one screen at a time with no change, and I kept going up until I was in the default screen. The Wonder Wheel would not work the volume in any screen. As a side note, the Wonder wheel works volume if I have the speakers on instead of the headset. I am able to control the media playback in the media screen for pause, skip a track, or go back a track. The volume still does not work.

By the way I'm using an Android phone that is on the latest software version

I'm not sure what revision I have but I just had it at a BMW dealership last week. They updated everything. The service writer told me I am now up to date with all firmware. Additionally as mentioned I have an Android not an iPhone and my Android is up to date with the current revision

Just trying to help you troubleshoot here. Your phone might be connected to both your helmet and bike at the same time with dual connection. When you play music from the phone, pull down the curtain and look at the top corner of the player app, it will say what it is sending the music to, make sure it is the bike. Conversely, you could go to the bluetooth menu and make sure your helmet is not also connected.
I think you have multiple pairings and the music is being routed to the helmet and not the bike.

I looked into this but I don't believe it's the issue. I did find the headset was once paired to my phone so I deleted that pairing but no change. Right now the headset has been cleared of all pairings, then repaired with the bike. The phone no longer has pairing available so it's impossible for the phone to connect directly to the headset yet nothing has changed.

Also, the app and connections are flakey. I turn the headset on first, then turn the bike on. If everything goes well it all appears and I can see navigation is ready to run. Whatever music was playing will start to play. If I want to change from the radio to Media the connection app disconnects and then nothing works. I'm not sure how to get it to work again other than shutting everything off including the bike and restarting. This is fine when I'm sitting in the garage but if I was actually riding I don't think I'd want to pull over to reset everything.

2024 GTL
Android phone
Cardo
Spotify playlist
Phone is wired into the bike
Watch the YT vid on how to pair your phone/cardo to your bike. Super easy
Phone will automatically connect to bike as soon as bike is powered on
DO NOT FORGET TO HIT "PHONE ALWAYS ON" under the display setting in Settings
Tap wheel to media
Tap again and you will see "play/pause" tap or use wheel and shift it to the right and the last playlist you were listening to will play....
Tap options button again and you wiil see the screen with the song playing. Wheel left or right will replay song or skip to next
Wheel is also your volume and will be displayed by a white bar bottom of screen
I will take a pic for you later today

Thanks for this information.

I was at the BMW dealership today and they thought my issue might be that I have an old Sena. I have a Shoei Neo Tech 2 helmet with a Sena 20s (before mesh). I went with this headset because it integrates with the helmet. I've bought both new about 5 years ago, but the 20s headset was outdated even at that time.

It was suggested that I look into updating the Sena, but the lady at the BMW dealership felt that there still might be an issue with the old Sena technology and using the Wonder wheel. If that's the case I might need to get a newer headset to make this work.

Can you tell me what model Cardo you have? Also if you wouldn't mind sharing what Android phone you have.

I'm assuming my 2022 GTL would have the same capabilities as your 2024.

This was Cardo's reply when I asked if any of their unit would work on my 2023 K1600

"Hi Ron,

Thank you for reaching out to Cardo Systems Support!

Unfortunately, our units are not compatible with BMW' volume wheel.

Sincerely
Yurii"

This is what I got from Sena

"Hi Ron,

Thank you for contacting Sena Sales.

You can pair the 60S with your BMW bike, as the device is compatible with the Wonder Wheel feature.

Regards,
Brandon
