Besides using the socket on the right (offside) panel for charging, the most useful thing it’s good for is for running power into a tank bag.
I convert my tank bags myself to take power, generally as I prefer them to the other ‘powered’ tank bags on offer out there,
Buy and use with absolute confidence: https://www.adventurebikeshop.co.uk/electrical/powerlet-mini-usb-standard-powerlet-cable-/ I have now given several tank bags the ability to receive power, using these well made sockets.

If anyone ever finds a use for the other power socket, buried away on the right (offside) side of the bike, down by the rear suspension unit, let me know, please. BMW are so embarrassed about it, they failed to even mention it in the UK owner’s handbook. I only discovered it by chance, when I dropped a glove and bent down to pick it up. They’d do better, moving the socket to the near side, putting it somewhere useful to run heated clothing.
