O2 sensor question

I’m probably overthinking this one, but if you gut the cats on your stock headers do you simply screw the sensors back into your “new” cat less headers and let the ECU do it’s thing?

Thanks,

Dave

(sorry, edited because of my super lazy writing).

You need an o2 sensor for reliable cold and low-mid RPM operation, you also need a way to help the engine understand and better manage AFR without the cat in place, it can come by way of booster plug, power commander like management, probably bren tune has a way of doing this as well. Is your catalytic converter not working properly? Pulling your cat is not going to have a big impact on performance unless of course you know your cat is not functioning properly.

+1 @earthling . If you remove the cat; e.g. cut it off, you'll have to weld an O2 bung to the filler pipe you replace it with.

What if you just cut open the existing CC, remove the contents, and weld it back up? Will this throw a CEL?

I did exactly that on my Dodge Ram, and it did not throw a code. Same on Harley 103, no code. Same on a K1600?

@atc250r , no it wouldn't throw a code; that would work fine.

Many just use a rod to break up the catalyst, its quite fragile, gutting the CC.

On a car where there's an O2 sensor upstream and downstream of the CC, you're likely to get a code indicating poor CAT performance, but on our scooters with only one O2 sensor per side the CC elimination will not be detected.

Our bikes only use the O2 sensors for fuel trim, no monitoring the CAT performance like is done in many cars.

Edit for Duane.

@1004ron , note: just to clarify, 2 O2 sensors, 1 each side.
