I have caught GS fever bad here lately. Sat on all of them at the dealer and just really jonesing for one. Can't have 2 bikes right now but just kind of thinking the GS would be a fun bike to have and allow me ride anywhere and not have to worry about messing it up when I drop it. Someone help talk me out of this

I'm not going to talk you out of it but I just left an adventure style bike because of the pure adrenalin rush I'm getting from twisting my right wrist of the K1600. Do you want to hit gravel and dirt? The GS is an awesome machine but the GT(L) is just plain phenomenal!

The GTL is everything I could dream of. There is just something appealing about going through the rugged terrain maybe I'm over thinking this. Good thing my autocom showed up so I will have some bonding time tonight to try and erase the thought of the GS.

Kevin, just do it. The GS/A is every bit as good as people tell you. It might, might even be better then the K16 in the twisties ( though I'm sure that statement will get me ostracized in these parts). The ability to take the road never traveled is just awesome. The power is adequate compared to most bikes, but anemic compared to the 16, but it's there, and I'm telling you from experience if your a good rider this bike can do anything. By the way it's pretty darn comfortable on long days too. It's not a K16, it's not a replacement for a K16, but it is the ultimate compliment to one inho.

To bad I sold mine Tuesday, so now I'm back to 3 bikes:(. It was a sweet deal too. I just found I preferred the GSA and wasn't using the GS

Wish I could have two bikes but not in the cards right now. Just started a new business so I am strapped.

I asked it on here because I know everyone would assure me that I am merely acting on impulse :D I tend to be this way with bikes. Maybe I will just get one on a demo day and that will cure the itch...

GTL to GS

There have been a few other threads or postings from others who have done exactly the same thing. The things they preferred about the GS or GSA are:

- Off road capable, of course.
- Simpler bike without all the fancy electronics, plastic panels, fancy features, etc.
- Lighter by 200 pounds.
- Very comfortable on long road trips.

With the GS or GSA, you do ride more "in the air" but these guys don't seem to mind. I just did 900 miles around Colorado with 5 guys on GS bikes (from 650 up to 1200 size). They had no trouble keeping up and left me behind in the twisties. If you are going to do a lot of 2 up highway riding, I'm not sure that a GS is a good way to go.

Ask yourself how much would you ride off road and for how long.
If this is an itch, go scratch it and rent one. If the decision is keeping you up at night, make a list of reasons, pros/cons, and sum up your list. You already know what you're gonna do, you're just trying to understand why.

I've had the same thing happen with that damned S1! I love that bike!!!
I rode one and liked it more than I thought I would - crap, now what?
For me, it has to be which one would give me more pleasure all-around?
The answer was extremely easy to come up with - the K1600.
The S1 is a toy for the Hot Rocket Monkey that lives inside. It's not a comfort bike, not a 2up bike, gets worse gas mileage, has no radio, etc, etc, etc.
BTW - I'd love to have one of each.

what he said.. /\

Run over to Cali Cycle Adventures and rent one for a weekend.. For Rent: Honda Goldwing & BMW Sport Touring, Harley-Davidson Cruisers - Rental Prices

That's what I'm doing with 1600GT next week .. If it's a good fit I'll buy the one I have a deposit on that's on the boat.. but if it doesn't fit I will be riding a GS to see if it scratches the itch... I would love to have both so all the itches could get scratched but having over 40k in bikes isn't in the cards right now so I have to get it right the first time..

Can't help. If I could pick one up (from the ground that is), might go that route myself. My last tour on a dual sport resulted in shoulder injuries that took in excess of a year to heal. If I were younger, would probably been only a couple of months.
Done with offroad.

My big hold up is the fact that I like to tour 2 up with my wife. It doesn't look as good for carrying a passenger. I like the 200 lbs lighter fact as Ive already dropped the K16. I like the simplicity, and I like the fact that you can drop it without really hurting it. I don't like the fact that it will not be as fast, comfortable, and 2 up capable like the K16. I think I will just start putting a little aside every month and wait for the '14 GS to come out and then have 2 bikes. Unless I can find a cheap used GS.

You are a very smart man :D I got my autocom in the mail today so tomorrow I will break out a couple of beers and have a nice 1 on 1 with the K16 that will fix any problems or doubts I may have. Then I will take it out on the highway and run her hard!

I typically do about that or more on mine with my wife. She does tend to fall asleep back there sometimes too LOL. My wife is only 5'4" so I think she would probably be okay back there I just don't think she would enjoy it as much. And the sport bike rider in me would miss the shear power with a passenger on the GS I think.

Care to trade bikes for a few weeks?

I have an '09 GSA that has taken me on dirt single track, the continental divide, from Cali to Georgia, and to the top of Alaska. 48,000 miles of fun, probably 4000+ miles of that on dirt and gravel roads.

Oh, and I live a mere 2 hours from you.

Los Gatos

Here's a picture of my bike. It's clean and shiny and never been down.

Uh... wrong picture... I guess it is more accurate to say it has never been Upside Down... I think... It seems to like taking dirt naps. So don't scratch it. :k16:
