Storm's Vacation Ride to the West

1167 Views 35 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  CavRider
Tomorrow, Friday May 19th I'm leaving Youngstown Ohio for a three week ride to Arizona/Colorado...

I'm basically doing a big loop. Heading south to Louisiana, then west to Bisbee Arizona.

Already my plans are askew.
I planned on riding the Tail of the Dragon this Saturday but with rain in the forecast, we'll see.
Then I planned on going to the Barbor Motorcycle museum Sunday. But the Moto-America guys are racing there this weekend. You have to buy a event ticket ($70) on top of buying a museum ticket.

I was thinking about going to the Huntsville Air and Space museum on Sunday, then going to the Barbor Motorcycle museum on Monday. However that might put me a day behind. Not a big deal, I just want to be in Bisbee by the weekend. May 27th

After spending a day or so with my cousin, I'm heading north through Arizona. Then Utah to Colorado.
I'll visit friends in Fort Collins then my brother in Colorado Springs area.

I'm not sure what route I'll take going home. Probably the Amarillo, across Oklahoma to Memphis route. I like stopping at the Big Texas Steakhouse in Amarillo. Oh, and ribs in Memphis.

Before going home. I'm going to a GS (no not that GS the original one) motorcycle rally in Bedford Indiana. I'm really looking forward to hanging out with them fellows.

I don't have real plans, just kind of winging it as I go. I'm mostly staying in hotels, but with the prices forever increasing, I'll probably be sleeping on a park bench on my way home!
Then it's back to work June 13th... 25 days on the road. Wish me luck! Haha

Yes, I'll use this thread to chronicle my trip with pictures. Well the best that I can. You know how it is. When you start out, you write down everything save all your receipts... By the end of the trip, it doesn't matter, the days seem to blend together, you're just looking forward to the next day, the next turn in the road...
Thank you for the well wishes.

Storm,
Take the route shown in the attached map from Bisbee north. The section of 191 (AKA hwy 666 AKA Coronado Trail) from Morenci to Springerville is not to be missed. 100 miles of up and down elevations with tons of twisties in the cool pine trees. If it's lunch time, when you get to Morenci, find The Miners Diner and Bar. It's located in a shopping mall. There is a modern gas station near the stop light on Burro Alley. Just North of Morenci watch for an information pull off and vista point for the open pit copper mine, one of the largest in the world, you will be traveling through it's property. Stop and read all the information boards it will be worth the time. There are several motels in Springerville of varying prices. Good meals at Booga Reds.

You can continue on 191 all the way to Moab, UT. I just came down that way last weekend and the roads are perfect with enough towns to be able to find gas and food.

A side loop that would be very memorable is when 191 gets to 160, in northern Arizona, take a left to Kayenta and then north on 163. This will take you next to Monument Valley, think John Wayne movies and Forrest Gump. Before you get to the town of Mexican Hat the Mexican Hat rock formation will be on your right. 163 will blend back into 191 north. Kayenta has several gas stations along with a McDonalds and Burger King. The Burger King has a nice display commemorating the Navajo code talkers of WWII.

When leaving Moab turn right at the north edge of town and take the river road (128) along the Colorado River all the way to I-70. You will not be disappointed. Of course there is Arches National Park right there outside Moab.

That sounds like a really great trip! I'm looking forward to your posts on your trip.
Storm64,

Sounds like a fun trip...wished I could go with you. I recently rode from LA to Wichita and back via Scottsdale. I'm the planner type, so I made reservations in advance with the ability to cancel if needed. Second, I used Google or Apple maps to find two things close to the hotel. The first was obviously a restaurant and the second was a self serve car wash...can't stand to ride a dirty bike. I was fortunate to be able to check in when I arrived...around 1300 - 1400 hrs. And finally, every hotel allowed me to park my K1600B under their front entrance awning for added security and weather protection. All you have to do is ask.

For the trip, I typically filled up with a 100 miles remaining in the tank. Bring the right gear for weather, etc. Ear plugs, face scarf, rain gear, etc. Ride safe.

Ha! I made it to Knoxville! 540 miles. I left Y-town at 6:45 this morning. 58° and overcast. I hit the rain south of Canton all the way to Parkersburg W.V... Then it cleared up and it was beautiful, then it got HOT well 89°
Tomorrow, rain in the forecast in the afternoon. I'm hoping I can ride the Dragon early in the morning before the rain(and crowd) Then the Cherahola skyway, probably in the rain. At least it's a dry rain. Haha

I rode the Tail of the Dragon this morning at 8:00am. I wanted to get a early start to beat the incoming rain.
I had fun riding the Dragon, but I thought it was to tight. I couldn't get out of third gear.
I loved the Cherohala Skyway! With its wide sweeping turns. However at 5000 feet above sea level, it was pea soup! You couldn't see anything.
I made it to Chattanooga, then the rain started.
I'm at a hotel north of Birmingham. Tomorrow's weather is looking good, I'm not sure if I will go to the Barbor Motorcycle museum or not... we'll see.

I’ve got that same Nelson Rigg Route 1 (?) bag on the back of the B, strapped to the Wunderlich rack. Love that bag!

I'm really liking the Nelson Rigg bag. Easy on and easy off.
The smaller tail bag, I leave on all the time. It holds my Nelson Rigg half cover and smaller nic-nacks.
I remember the days of having to use a million Bungee Cords to strap down your suitcase!
Heck I could make a Nelson Rigg commercial! Haha

I went to the Barbor Motorcycle museum!
I'm so glad I did! It would have been like driving by your mother's house and not stopping in, it would have ate at me for days...
I figured, even if I have to buy a event ticket (Moto-America $70) I figured what the heck, it might be awhile till I make it back.
Turns out, I did not have to buy a event pass to get into the museum!
I even was able to watch some racing from the museum location.
Yep, about three to four hours is what it takes to walk the museum.

What amazed me the most was the evolution of front brakes. With the various types of air vents and massive drums. To multi piston calipers that we see too. Very cool!
I'm in Mobile Alabama now. What a BLAST down I 65! Everyone doing 85-100 mph! Crazy

I used a Nelson Rigg Route 1 bag with my Goldwing but it has been gathering dust in the corner since I got the GTL...if you keep promoting it as a great bag, I best put it for sale on the forum classifieds :D

Monday was brutal.
After riding in the on and off rain Friday and Saturday. I noticed a little itchy throat, a occasional sneeze. Yep, I was catching a cold!
I went to the drug store to pick up some cold medicine. Well, I didn't read the part "may cause drowsiness"!
I still had to ride 300 miles to Lafayette Louisiana. I probably should have just bee-lined it across Interstate 10, but decided to take the southern route on route 90 Biloxi, Gulfport... all the way to ROAD CLOSED BRIDGE OUT.
I had to back track, I jumped on I10 to get around New Orleans. I finally made it to the hotel and I was spent. I didn't even have dinner!
Since I got a nice hotel room relatively cheap I decided to spend a extra day in Lafayette to recuperate.
I feel much better today after eating a seafood Po'Boy and nibbling on some fried Alligator.
I'll be good to go tomorrow morning!

Hope you're back to 100% soon...be sure to rest when you need it. The road will be there the following day...maybe not a bridge...
