Amber running light conversion

I would also be happy to pre-pay. You could set a date by which all pre-paid orders have to be in and then make your parts order based upon those committed by payment. A very reasonable strategy. I would also say you should charge what it's worth to you for your inconvenience and time. It's fun to make one or maybe a few but I bet it's going to seem like the movie Groundhog Day for a while if you have an order for 20+ kits. I think we would all be understanding of a "make it worth my time" up charge.

Same here, PM your email address and I'll paypal the funds this weekend. You shouldn't have to go out of pocket to order parts and I agree with Pete, something for your great design and efforts would not be unreasonable at all. Thank you!

Wes

Got notice of the refund. Thanks Brent - I would have happily donated that to your time and effort which you're very graciously putting in on this project. Thanks again for taking it on and I'll be patiently waiting on this great mod to show up on my door step in due time.

Awesome. Wishing you a safe and enjoyable ride and looking forward to hearing the ride report in a couple of weeks.

Brent, thank you so much for undertaking this project. There will be a healthy number of us riding around in the near future more safely than would otherwise been the case without your expertise and willingness to offer this up to our community.

You rock!

Wes

I connected the new signal boards to a spare 5A channel on my PDM60 that I recently installed which is also used to power a set of Clearwater Glenda lights.
Hey Brent,

I want to make sure I know what I'll need to do when I receive your kit. I don't have a PDM60 installed or any other conspicuity lights (factory or otherwise) on the bike. Will the installation require a switched power source to be tapped or is it contained already in the wiring that is encapsulated in the kit connectors?

I understand you're putting together some installation instructions with the kit and I know we all truly appreciate the professionalism with which you've approached this project. I'm just asking because I'd like to go ahead and get any other homework done/parts ordered so that I'm ready to install it when the kit arrives.

Thanks!

Wes

Wes, you can probably handle this yourself, but in the off-chance you would like to use my garage and/or lift to do the installation, just let me know. I did something similar with Skene's modules. And yes, you'll need a switched power source and a ground connection.
Thanks for the generous offer Mark! I still haven't had the fairing off my bike yet and figured I'd go poking around in there once I got cbdane's kit. I had the dealer install my built-in Gerbing temp controller on a switched relay so that I wouldn't leave it on inadvertently but I haven't fussed with it at all yet. I may look in to installing the PDM60 and putting the Gerbing, my electric tank bag, and this running light kit off of that.

I may go ahead and swap out the horn at the same time while I'm in there and a lift would be pretty darn convenient to have available. Even if I do the work here in my garage I might want to run out your way and just see what your lift set up is all about and see if I have room for something like that.

Got mine and I'll be digging in to my bike tomorrow to install them. Thanks Brent!

Wes

Owing to the very detailed instructions, the installation was very easy and look only about an hour and half to do - most of that time was because I've never owned a bike with a fairing before and never had the fairing off the this bike so I spend a bit of time just snooping around and looking for the best way to route the wiring. Everything works perfectly and I want to offer my sincere thanks for Brent for the very professional job of putting these kits together.

One last question - Brent, I think you mentioned that the ultimate cost was about $25 per kit more than you thought. I'm happy to chip back in to cover your costs and just want to make sure you're made whole and feel good about it before I do another paypal for you. Let met know if $25 covers it or if you need a bit more?

Nice shop and fun video. Every time I raise my garage door, a neighbor or two wanders over to see what I'm up to, my 6 year old wants me to help her with something, and my lab drops a ball at my feet. I think it took me 45 minutes just to get the bike all naked and ready for the install :)

I may be my imagination but I would swear that other people on the road are making longer eye contact with me now.

Be patient with it and it'll come off. It snaps in and just needs a little coaxing right at the pointy bit near the top. I put a Popsicle stick in the gap to pop it over the snapped in edge. Going back on was very easy.

...plus, as a bonus, it restores emergency flashers near the front of the bike in case the bike ever did leave me stranded somewhere.
Hi Brent,

My emergency flashers work just fine after the installation of your kit. The fronts flash out of sync with the rears but that's exactly how I'd expect it to work based upon the design. There's no loss of emergency flasher function with the kit installed and the point of whether the front/rear are in sync I see as a non-issue.

Something interesting happened that I'll pass along. I was out fussing with the bike in the garage verifying the function of the flashers and when I was done, turn off the bike at the key like I normally would. I looked at the front of the bike and the flashers were off. About an hour later I went out in my driveway and noticed that the rear flashers were still on! They must be programmed to stay on with the key in the OFF position but I didn't notice them because the front was not flashing. I hit the emergency flasher button and no effect - they rears kept on flashing. I turned the bike on, hit the emergency flasher button and they stopped flashing.

The net result of all that - my front flashers work when the bike is on or running but when the bike is turned off, only the rear flashers are flashing. That makes sense since I tapped the low beam light for power for the flasher kit and it goes off when I shut off the key.

I just want to say again how great a mod this is to the bike. I get comments on it from other riders who tell me how much it makes the bike's appearance "pop." It's much more conspicuous with these lights on and thank you again to cbdane to offering this great feature to us.

I've received a sizable group of orders for Round 3. I'll need to place new orders for connectors this coming Tuesday morning so, if anyone is still interested, I'll leave the ordering process open until then. $140 (shipping included) to the US, $152 overseas. Again, my Paypal is cbdane arobase comcast.net.

Whenever I ride in a group, people are always commenting on how well those amber running lights make my bike stand out. I continue to be very happy with the result of this mod to the bike. Way better than stuck on lights that look like an afterthought says I.

There is a company in Germany that makes a light modification for the BMW Roundel. The light mounts under the roundel. I installed the new version that has a white light for running and turns amber for the turn signal. I think the cost was around $150.00 US.

It took me about 2 hours to remove the trim and make the additions. It is just another bit of flashing light and works well with the Amber Conversion kit.

Have you guys ridden much in the dark with these? Is the glow from the white running light very noticeable to the rider at night? Nice mod - looks like it's a factory thing.

And yes, it can be seen at night (NOT by the rider) as a soft while side light.
That was more my question - by the rider. I'd be concerned about it spoiling my night vision if I lean off just a bit and have this white light shining up into my eyes. Is there a version of it that doesn't glow at all until I activate the amber lights (flashers, turn signals, etc)?
