Beware of iOS 11 -Bluetooth issues

Gents, just a word of caution. I had my Sena 10s, BMW Nav6 and my iPhone 6 perfectly working. Phone calls via NAV6 and Sena, audible warnings etc. all went well. The iOS 11 comes along and that was it with love, peace and happiness. It appears that the new bluetooth stack has a lot of issues for example it does not release a channel after using it and thereby blocks media or intercom. Took me a while to figure that out by disabling Smartlink traffic and safety cameras. With that all went back to normal. Any similar experiences in the esteemed forum membership?

YES, I've been fighting with iOS 11 since I downloaded it. Overtime I turn on the Sena something else doesn't work... Or after getting everything operating, e.g. comm, SR10, RD, iPhone, etc, turn off just ONE Of these and I'm back to ground ZERO. I've been able to get everything working but only by luck (trial and error); when it starts working I have no idea what I did...

Rambler358, I just sent an address from Garmin Smartlink to my NAV V, worked fine. ...good luck.

IOS 11 has a lot of issues. As of yesterday they were already on 11.0.3. This is not only effecting our comms but also people who fly drones. One of mine was limited to beginner mode but that is better then a fly away.
Another problem has been rapid battery discharge.

Same experience here...luckily I was able to revert to iOS 10 on my iPhone as I was having Sena problems as well...and poor phone battery life.

Also in the process of retrograding my iPad 2 Mini back to iOS 10 as 11 has caused some problems with my drone (Mavic Pro).

Grrrrr...

The IOS Garmin app updated 3 days ago. One of the reported changes was IOS 11 “Adaptations”. I haven’t had to reconnect any bluetooth connections since then but I do not yet use a bluetooth headset thus my configuration is less complex.

FWIW, my problems started with the last Garmin Nav V update.

I was using iOS 10, and I was getting one way calls, no call notifications on GPS, spotty smart link, etc.

Since I use BT mostly for music playing, I just let it go for awhile...months actually...

Then I was at the dealer and decided to ask if there was a BT update for the BMW com sys in my helmet...there was...version 250 if I remember correctly.

I had them update the helmet com sys, and I’ve had no problems since...even with iOS 11. All systems go...for now...lol.

With the latest patch everything seems to be working again, e.g. RD, iPhone, remote, and music... The Sena 30K from the group buy will be here Saturday so I get to go through all this again.

If you want to go back from iOS 11.02 or later to iOS 10 you are SOL. Only 11 and 11.01 will allow downgrade.......

Yes, same here. I put a Android 5.0 with a secondary SIM card on the bike and that's it.
Car is a different story, iPhone 6 connection is hit or miss and my Garmin GLO external GPS will only work if the iPhone goes through a cold start. Don't have the patience to deal with this perennial crap.

This isn't going to help other than to show that it does indeed work without issues sometimes, but on my brand new, September 2017 K1600 GT (you guys call these 2018 models in the US for some reason), full options, System 6 with BMW BT kit, Nav VI and iPhone 7 running iOS 11: zero problems whatsoever. BT works fine and so does Garmin Smartphone Link.

Now iOS 11.1, no change in functionality issues in the car (2015 Audi A6) or bike. factory reset on two different iPhone 6 with iOS11.1 did not make a difference. Old HTC ONE M7 from 2013 is doing just fine..............mildly pissed about Apple and their arrogant way of handling bluetooth stacks.

No real problems for years with iPhone 6S, but with a change to iPhone 8 my Smartlink will not hold a data connection to the Nav VI. Fine with Nav V, and checking with another iPhone 8 to Nav VI that works. Garmin Australia don’t really want to know, they have quoted a list of Smartlink compatible GPS products which doesn’t list the BMW Navigator series. Problem solved: for them!

Advice from anyone here would be appreciated.

I've been very unhappy with my iPhone 6+ since upgrading it to iOS 11. I'm in the process of doing the 11.1 download now to see if it makes it any better. Quirky would be how I'd describe it in a word. Poor response time to opening or closing some apps, weird internet behavior, slow to open when I wake it up - it's like a whole bunch of CPU cycles are being gobbled up by something.

I haven't noticed any funky BT issues with it but I don't pair mine with the Nav; only my Sena units.

So, it seems that the update does not impair Bluetooth functionality on the iPhone X but does screw up that functionality on iPhone 6s. Can’t speak to iPhone 7 or 8s. Will there be a fix for iPhone 6owners anytime soon? Could it be that Apple is trying to force people to upgrade to the X?
I have an iPhone X coming next week. I'm hoping my Bluetooth issues are resolved as well with that phone.

I did the same as you - buying another Tune2air dongle thinking the first might be defective, but that wasn't the case. Prior to my iPhone 7 Plus and iOS 11, I also had no issues. I'm crossing my fingers hoping the iPhone X won't have these Bluetooth issues.

I had a iPhone 6+ with Bluetooth that functioned perfectly, connecting my phone, my Cardo Packtalk, my Max 360 radar detector and Escort Live app, a Tune2Air dongle, and Garmin Smartlink for my Nav V and later Nav VI and the audio system on my GT together. I upgraded to an iPhone 7+, which also functioned perfectly in the Bluetooth department. Had an unfortunate situation with the 7+ and got a 6+ from my company’s IT dept that had previously been used by a now separated employee to tide me over until the iPhone Xs came out.
In setting up that phone, Apple insisted that I upgrade to iOS11. From the start, I had numerous Bluetooth issues. I could only intermittently connect to some of my devices and those connections were iffy. Connections dropped while others froze. I was beyond frustrated and, at the time, was unaware that the problem was with the update. So, I spent hours over many days and worked to reboot and unpair and re-pair one device after another over and again to try to get things going right again. I even went so far as to buy another Tune2Air, thinking that mine might have broken and was the cause of the problem. I also swapped the iPhone 6+ for another 6+ that my IT Dept had with no change in Bluetooth performance, or, better stated, lack thereof.
Two days ago, the iPhone X that I had preordered arrived. I wasted no time in setting it up and pairing it to my various devices and testing them. During the setup, I tried to skip the “update to IOS11” step, but found that to be not possible. Nevertheless, I am happy to report that all of my Bluetooth connections now seem to function perfectly as they once did before iOS 11 came out.
So, my take here is that the update to iOS 11 does not impair Bluetooth functionality on the iPhone X but does screw up that functionality on iPhone 6s. Not having had an iPhone 7 or an 8 with the iOS 11 update I can’t speak to what iOS 11 does to them. Will there be a fix for iPhone 6 owners anytime soon? Could it be that Apple is trying to force people to upgrade to the X? Can’t say; but I can say that of all the features that the iPhone X has that other models don’t, for me, by far, the best feature is that the Bluetooth connectivity of the X works like all the othe models did before Apple screwed them up with the iOS 11 update. That alone made the unreasonably high cost of the X worth every cent!

Called Garmin Monday morning (13th) after all my efforts the past 3 months with many different versions of IOS on my iPhone 7. I have never had all the features of the Nav6 work reliably at one time (phone calls, traffic, weather, music streaming on my XR). I tried all methods of pairing/re-pairing and sequencing the pairing.

The help desk said that there was no point in helping me fix the problem with the iPhone until a software update is completed and delivered via garmin express installer. They asked me if I wanted to be added to the email list so that I'd know that the update is available. I said "yes." (no point in complaining to the help desk person who has no control over this stuff)

From a former software program manager's perspective, I understand Garmin's issues of dealing with a new operating system on a supported system (IOS). But--I also understand that Apple probably gives app developers quite a bit of support and lead time for these changes. Also, I'm paying a premium price for a device that advertises all these nifty features to justify the price. Don't get me wrong--the navigation unit has an awesome screen, a decent interface, and (if like my Nav V) very hardy.

Just frustrated. Maybe I'll get a cell phone holder so that I can get view of the traffic conditions and see who's calling me.

With the latest iOS update v11.1.2, I believe my Tune2air device is finally working again. And with the latest Garmin SmartLink app update I can once again transfer addresses to my Nav VI. All is right in the world again.
