A small thing but I sure like the convenience of not having to unlock the fuel cap. Also, much less cumbersome filling up without the open lid in the way.

Plus, I like how it looks .

Brent, I just installed the SSR gas cap the other day and noticed the same unsightly gap at the bottom of unit. I could clearly see the red plastic inside the tank. Even worse, I smelled fuel constantly after gassing up. Not cool.

Assuming it was operator error I removed the four screws and installed it again ensuring the gap was consistent all the way around the part. I torqued down the screws evenly and now it looks perfect. No odd gap and no smell of petrol. Yes!

I too, ground down the hinge on the OEM cap but prefer the ease of the SSR.

Brent, as the above photo shows, its a nice fit, no gaps.

Love mine, especially because it does away with BMW's "tit" in the stock gas cap cover that interferes with the fuel nozzle and is major annoying.

. . . and it looks great.

I bought an additional screw-on gas cap to have in case of emergency (like if/when I lose it somewhere in Southern Utah during a ride!).

I have seen a thread about that modification. Were you the one that had a thread showing how to modify the cap pivot distance? I just tried to do a search but have no idea what key words would work. "Gas Cap" seems to open just about every post out there
I should be able to figure out how to do it but sometimes it's nice to read about how NOT to do it :)

I put one on and liked it. Then thought about the long distance rides and hotel, etc., parking lots and realized that (1) it's an easy steal and (2), if I was dumb enough to lose the cap, I was finished.

I removed the stock assembly and used a dremel and very carefully, repeat very carefully, removed enough of the area which prevents the cap from rolling back far enough on the hinge to produce a larger access opening. Fueling is now easier and I can lock it. I still like the look of the screw on, but prevention . . .

I've done hundreds of thousands of miles through 49 states, most provinces, dozens of countries, and several continents.

I've never had anyone mess with my keyless fuel caps . . .

Ordered a black one today. I have not had any problems fueling up with the stock cap even with the Tourmaster handle bar Bag I have installed. I am planning a trip to California in August & do not want any issues fueling up out there. Plus I like to stay on the bike at fuel stops & this will make them faster & easier.

Talk about GREAT Service !!! I ordered this on Sunday, Now Wednesdays (3 days later) the Gas cap is Here. I'm waiting on the black paint on the screw heads to dry so I install it. I've also removed the chrome strips on the side bags & the Chrome GTL strips at the BMW rondel. When it's all done I'm hoping to have all the chrome off the bike. I've covered the windshield chrome brackets with carbon fiber over lay & will paint all the rest with a Matte Black paint including the top case tail light bezel.

Installed mine at lunch. Looking forward to easier fill ups…

Notice that yours is a different design that the first photos posted on this thread, i.e. doesn't have 6 radial ribs in the machining pattern. Also, it installs with a larger gap where the rear of the fuel cap meets the plastic tank cover. That's the way the one that I had also fit. Would it still have this gap if you flipped it front to back? My guess is that if you reverse it, the fit to the tank trim opening will improve.

BTW, lesson learned; arranged for return of this defective piece and ordered a "proper" one from Slingshot racing.

SSR cap

Looks like everyone that has the SSR billet gas cap has one with what must be a screw on style cap. I see they also make a quarter turn version. Has anyone tried one of these?

They're $100 from SSR. For 1/2 the price I'll turn it a little further....;)

Update: Argghh! In my not so dexterous attempt to flip it, I inadvertently knocked off one of the screw sleeves and yep, you guessed it, down into the gas tank it went.

So, now I've spend the better part of an hour trying to fish that small part out of my tank with no luck. The pick up tool I'm using seems to be ill suited for the purpose.

Anyone had to fish anything out of their tank and if so, what did you use?

Note: the sleeve doesn't appear to be metallic so I'm out of luck with a magnetic pickup tool, methinks.

ARGGHHH!

And as you can probably tell from the photo, it's evident the adhesive used to adhere the sleeves to the cap is inferior. Ya gets what you pay for. Lesson learned.

I haven't needed to fish anything out  but unless what I dropped was magnetic, I would probably just remove the tank. Relatively easy job. Just be sure to hold the locking clamp all the way in when disconnecting the fuel line at the back of the tank or you will destroy the O-ring.

The two long rear screws require a 6mm hex and torque to 124 in-lbs.
The single front screw requires a T45 torx and torque to 168 in-lbs
The front side screws for the air intake vents are T30 torx and torque to 71 in-lbs

Good luck.

If you remove the plastic bodywork over the gas tank, and then the air filter box, you'll see the large, round fuel pump plate at the rear of the tank.

Unscrew the large silver "nut", remove the fuel pump pate, and you'll easily be able to get your hand inside the tank to fish it out. No need to remove the whole tank.

Then it's just putting everything back together.

Update: I didn't have to even go as far as either Meese or, papalynn suggested. Simply took off the plastic, tank trim and gas cap fixture and had a large enough opening to get the pickup tool into the recesses of the tank.
(pretty easy to see too).
Fished out the small piece and put it all back together in about an hour.
In addition I was able to re-install the gas cap without the sleeves and now it fits better.
Although, I still don't like the build quality of this knock off.

Hi Mike: I filled up for the first time with the new bike. I did not experience any problem or difficulty. I will say that how BMW decided to have the gas cap open "backwards" is unexplicable. Do you know if it is possible to just unscrew it and rotate it 180 degrees? I do not want to replace it, just reorient it. Thanks.

The K16's fuel cap is not symmetrical, so just swapping it around won't work.

I did do that on my K12/13GT, by trimming some of the plastic ring underneath.

On the K16, it's not anywhere near that easy, since the hole in the actual fuel tank isn't round.
