My wife just ordered the BMW Tourshell Jacket and pants. The stuff looks pretty good on the internet. Does anyone have real life experience with this gear?

After looking at the assorted Klim gear and REV'IT! Poseidon GTX I went with the BMW Tour Shell. This stuff appears to be bullet-proof. The armor is BMW's proprietary version of D3O/SAS-TEC and the coverage, particularly at the elbows and knees, is better than anything else I've looked at. The knee guards wrap around both sides of the knee and extend down the shin all the way to my boot tops. The elbow pads do the same, extending nearly to my wrists. The day I purchased I rode home in some pretty serious rain and stayed dry as a bone. The jacket appears to be vented quite well with a large diagonal vent on each side with similarly big vertical exhaust vent behind. BMW claims that the fabric weave actually opens and closes depending on temperature. So far, I'm very happy with my purchase -- and I saved close to $400 versus the cost of the REV'IT! gear!!!

Thought I'd toss out that I just picked up this gear on Wednesday. Don't want to mislead here but I really am impressed, so far.

I have the tour shell jacket. Love it. Lighter than a traditional adventure jacket but heavier than I would like. Also coming from a more adventure style jacket I miss having some of the larger pockets. My wife who is my pillion misses the rabbit pocket as she would stuff things she wanted quick access to (camera etc) in mine.

I love it for its ability to be an all weather jacket. Pretty cool in the summer but fully waterproof and with the destination liner warm down to near freezing.

Apparently there was some doubt over the durability of the zips but mine are holding up and that's what the warranty is for.

The only thing that would stop me buying it again today is the fact that Klim just reduced the Latitude.

I put several hundred thousand miles on BMW's ComfortShell jacket (the TourShell's predecessor).

It's comfortable, waterproof, breathable with some nicely placed vents, and very protective, as I've had the unfortunate experience of testing.

The price is right up there with other premium protective gear, but it's worth it.

Ken,
I tried on the Comfort Shell that was on the rack at the dealer this weekend. I'm sure it had been there a few years and the price tag (I do believe) on the jacket was over $700.00.

The back protector insert felt like a 1x6 board against my back. I assumed it was because it was just hanging there for a few years and it was cold. It's my hopes the new tour shell isn't the same. If so I'll exchange the protector insert with another option from my old Olympia jacket.

I have the jacket and like it quite a bit. The armor is top notch. It gets too warm for me above 90 or so, and I usually switch to a Revit Tornado above that. I did wear it for a recent trip that temps varied from 40's and fairly heavy rain in Colorado to about 112 through Phoenix. It did well in all but the hottest, but a cool vest helped in the heat. My only real problem with the jacket has been the velcro on the wrists. It is rather weak and doesn't always stick.

Thanks for all the responses...all very positive. She tried ordering the Klim Women's Lattitude (or whatever its called) but everyone including Klim is out of stock in her size. I'll pass on these comments, I'm sure it will make her feel good. Me too...

My wife and I both have tour shell suits for the fall/winter. We've worn then on multi day trips in temps ranging from the 30s to 100. The suits are simply awesome. I have only two complaints:

1. They are heavy.
2. There is zero ventilation in the pants (jacket has plenty). I'd love to be able to open up some airflow to the crotchal area.

TourShell - still good?

Hi Guys

Are those who bought the TourShell still happy about them?

Usually I carry an overjacket and the one I have has done me really well when used over my normal jacket. But, it's a faff to put on and I sweat a lot under it - but completely waterproof when used over my normal jacket.

I got caught out today in heavy rain and didn't have the overjacket on. My normal jacket leaked like a seive!

So, thinking about the NEC Birmingham M/C show over here in the UK I'm looking for a waterproof textile jacket. Is there really such a thing? Given pockets and vents there may not be such animal as a jacket that can be worn year-round that is truly 100% waterproof - unless you know different.

My trousers are expensive BMW ones and they held up really well but a jacket like them would be about ÂŁ500 (eek). Having said that comfort is a must on a long ride.

Have any of you got a jacket you'd recommend other than the BMW one??

Happy (and dry) riding.

I've ridden my ComfortShell (TourShell predecessor) in 123°F with all vents open, light gloves, and drinking lots of water. It was hot, but tolerable.

These are not cheap, but it is as close to a year-round all-weather jacket as I've found so far.

Thanks

I've got some BMW suede trousers (pants)( can't remember the design name) that I have had for years and I love them. Warm in winter and cool in summer. I think I'll keep those and carry some over trousers like I have done for years.

I remember being in the dealer and thinking I must be mad to pay so much for a pair but I have never regretted spending the money.

To be fair to the trousers they got well wet outside today but I was dry underneath so they are doing a decent job for me. I have just felt that some light overtrousers were belt and braces approach.

I like the idea of the Tour Shell jacket though. I don't like the price however, but hey ho - that's BMW for you.

Regards

David

Love my Tourshell.

In these days of advanced materials and construction techniques there is little need for having separate waterproof gear. I find great value in wearing one jacket and not having to worry about stopping if it rains.

Of course I live and ride in a temperate climate so don't have to worry about the extremes of the temperature gauge.

Another option is the BMW Streetguard gear. My wife initially ordered the Tourshell jacket and pants and when fit was an issue she got the Streetgaurd stuff and loves it. The collar was an issue for her with the Tourshell jacket.

+1. I recently got the Streetguard 4 pants and jacket and love it. Bit high $$$ but seems like well made and if it lasts.....

Heavy, yes. And expensive. But comfortable over a wide variety of weather conditions, and (as I unfortunately found out) very protective . . .

Ordered the Streetgaurd gear yesterday. Dealer said I would have it by next Wednesday. Apparently I had a bunch of points saved up so with them I saved about $300.00.

TourShell

After much research and reading of others reviews, I decided the BMW TourShell was the best option for what I was looking for. Ordered it last night but will need to wait for the snow to go before I get to ride with it.

For those interested, I did see one new, old style Comfort Shell Jacket, size Euro 56 on the rack at the dealer but chose to leave it there.

My wife and I bought the Comfort Shell jackets 3 years ago. My comments:

- The C change fabric does really seem to work: lets air through when hot, seals up when cold.
- The jacket has only 2 vents on the front which don't open up very well to let air in. There is no vent in the middle of the back, so the area under the massive back pad gets very hot and sweaty. Thus the jacket doesn't vent well and isn't good for hot temperatures.
- The fabric didn't hold up well. After a couple of washings, it looked really bad: puckery, pulled, faded, etc. We were pretty unhappy about how the jackets looked.
- The leather wrap at the edge of the collar and sleeves was a nice touch.

If the Tour Shell perpetuates these same problems, I wouldn't buy it. We bought Klim jackets and have been much happier with them.

Just a quick update on my Tourshell Jacket

I have not had to try its rain protection yet but I have ridden in some cold weather and I have been perfectly warm - no issue there!

I find the cuffs a bit bulky under my glove cuffs but not a real issue.

The high collar is a bit much up into the helmet opening but that is a price I have to pay for a warm neck.

So far so good. I'm looking forward to using it in warmer weather and zipping out the inner fleece or using that as an evening warm jacket & not having to take a fleece in my luggage.
