A very informative video about WHY YOU SHOULD NOT PUT A CAR TIRE ON A MOTORCYCLE.

 

For those that won't know, the first audio overlay on the first video is BS. Daryl, why don't you tell us about all those thousands of miles of experience you seem to think you have with a car tire on the back of a K bike, excluding the trip to SLC last year (we all know how that worked out for you)?

Why is it that you want people here to think something bad happened to me because I had a car tire on my bike? The bike had nothing to do with why I got sick.


I was willing to bet I would hear something negative, but accuse my health problems on car tires?
I would say "Try not to run into a truck, while you are obsessing about car tires on motorcycles." , but that would be about as insensitive as what you stated. I just don't get it. Why for multiple times now say something ugly about my getting sick. Yea, I wound up in the hospital, but it wasn't due to an accident or a car tire. And J had me convinced that you were genuinely concerned for my health. Obviously not.


WARNING: Do not use car tires. May cause kidney stones. Geezzzzz. I give up.

 

The first video is, of course, total BS. I thought the second video was very informative and it almost started to convince me that going to the dark side might not be so bad. Right up until the end of the video, when the narrator says, "They just handle like crap. If you can put up with that, well..." Um, yeah, no thanks!

 

Rode a friends Ducati with one of those car tires on it for roughly 250 miles and if you ride vertical and mostly interstate then its not that bad. I will say that any attempt to do spirited riding through the twisties will eventually get you a free ride to the emergency room.

 

Tried a car tire on my 2003 VTX once. Hated it so much I sold the bike. Actually, I had done everything to the bike and decided to give it a try out of boredom. First thing I noticed is that the handling went to schite. I'm pretty much now convinced that if you like the whole car tire thing, you cannot be a sport rider. You couldn't be. You would have to live well into the touring realm of the sport/touring continuum.

And now with these kidney stones, count me out for sure.:surprise:

 

Why? What is to be gained? And we allow people like this to vote????

Many of the long distance riders I ride with are darksiders. I've ridden car tires some and to be honest it depends on the bike and I'd be hard pressed to tell any difference after about a half hour in the saddle of either a Goldwing or ST1300. I have a hard time believing you could wreck a VTX's handling with square cement tires :surprise: .

My last Alaska trip was with 2 ST1300 darkside riders, one ST had 270,000 miles on it and the other only 180,000. They were getting anywhere from 35,000-50,000 miles on a rear tire. When they ride with "sport" riders they are also normally at the front of the pack on the "twisties".

I really have a hard time understanding why anyone cares ..........

Love your statement about the VTX, if you're talking about the 1800. Those things make an HD Ultra feel like a sport bike in comparison. They are the Monster Truck of Motorcycles. lol

 

It's nice to hear of others with so much experience with the VTX1800. Which models did you both own/ride?

What I've found in discussing the c/t issue is that long distance riders see the value in the longevity of c/t. But I've never heard a sport rider sing the praises of a c/t. Oh sure, you can lean over with a c/t, and there's even some argument that the contact patch is larger when the sidewall flexes. OK fine.

Here are a couple of my real-life observations:
1) Has to be pushed over a hump in the lean angle.
2. Harder to keep a line in a curve due to its flexing configuration.
3) Fine input is dampened, causing less assurance in tight situations such a "lane sharing".
4) Seemed fine in a straight line. But even straight lines need the corrections mentioned in #3.

The VTX is extraordinarily nimble. The biggest problem was the lean angle geometry. So many of us considered the floorboards a maintenance replaceable item.

There are videos on youtube of just about everything.
The one thing I have not been able to find on youtube is anything about a car tire failure, other than that stupid video that I originally posted, making light of car tire haters. As I said, in poor taste, but maybe some found it educational or entertaining in some way.?.?. Sorry if you missed it before I deleted it. It's on youtube; you can do a search.

I've seen ads in magazines and on the internet for many years posted by lawyers asking if you or anyone you know has had or been injured by a rear MOTORCYCLE TIRE failure.

I've never seen an ad like these mentioning a rear CAR TIRE failure.

The thing that I find strange is that I've not head of rear tires failing, but heard of several front tires coming apart. One friend lost a front tire on his fairly new HD on a trip, had a new one put on, only to have it come apart also on the same trip. Rumor was that HD had a batch of bad tires go out around that time. IIRC, it was around 2010, but not sure. I've never had that experience, but have had one flat on the front and one on the rear while riding. Didn't go down either time, but scared me pretty good on both occasions.

The Bottom Line: Before I ever put on my first car tire many years ago, I searched far and wide for examples of where a car tire caused a problem. Didn't hear of any. Still haven't. But, we all know car tires weren't meant to be used on a motorcycle, don't endorse it, but some do it anyway.
The question that @TPadden asked, why care, if I asked it, I would be wanting to hear a true life story that would keep me from wanting to use a car tire. Instead, I hear only opinions that are backed by the science, of bad handling, and how the tire doesn't fit the rim properly. As someone else stated earlier, there are many CT riders that can outdo their sporty riding buddies using MC tires. I guess there is an exception to most every rule.

 

Speaking of exceptions to the rule.

There is a guy with a Gold Wing that rides the dragon like he's on a sport bike. almost

There are guys that can handle a K with a car tire like it was a sport bike. almost

I don't fall into any of those categories. I rarely go over the speed limit and don't have the experience riding a bike in that sporty fashion. I CAN go straight and go around corners just fine; just not real fast.
