Interesting read here, never thought about ever needing one again (until I rode a GT and will say its a must). Ive had 2 Valentine V-1's in the past, but use to get a ton of false blips so I got rid of them. What are some of the better ones these days?

There's a couple of them, Escort has a few like the Redline, Max etc.. then there's the Adaptive TPX. I think Andy (amorley) and one or two other guys here run those. I'm sure they could have some input on their effectiveness. The cool part about the TPX is they were made for motorcycles.

Alrighty - the cat is out of the bag now so I'll add my 2 cents of what I know about the new Unidens.
Uniden has developed two all digital detectors. The R1 and the R3. They collaborated with Tom who owns Best Radar Detectors for outside beta testing of the new design. They looked great in the lab but as everyone knows sometimes those results are not applicable in real world situations. Tom sells a ton of detectors and has a lot of contacts in the industry.
SO, Tom supplied several units to the guys at RDForum several months ago. The members there are through and relentless with their testing. Their test results has led everyone to the conclusion that the lab results are fairly comparible to the real world results.
Uniden has no units available at this time and won't have any until late July or August (sea shipment). Uniden did however allow Tom a special air freight shipment of 150 units. I'm guessing in appreciation for the mountains of data they received from him and the RDF members.
His air shipment is supposed to hit the ground May 31st. and he is taking pre-orders for those units. The link to his storefront is below.

For those riding on twisty roads, the ability to sniff out Ka coming around the bend is important.

 

I have the Valentine 1 running through the J&M CB radio hookup so the warning comes in the right speaker of my helmet works fine...long enough warning time to get slowed down in most instances unless I'm the first one to get hit with instant on.......

 

For those of you running the Parnes lights, don't you care what band of radar the alert is?

With ear buds, you hear the beep-beep (far more attention-catching than lights) as well as the voice telling you whether it's KA or K band, which for me definitely changes how I react. I had Parnes LED's, but they were complete junk. If anyone wants them, they're yours for free. They're that bad (once you have audio, you're spoiled).

My problem is this. My IEM's were purchased to provide hearing protection, plug into my 20s for comms and music. I don't see a way to hear the detector without dropping music and comms. I'm not changing my entire set up so lights is the best it's going to get.

I wonder if these new Uniden units are compatible with the HARD system? Where is it you found where the lights will plug into them? I don't see any specs on them with what type of power plug or aux outputs etc...

 

If you have an older V1 that is detecting side collision radar, you can send it back to Valentine and they will update it for you. Makes a world of difference with the update.

 

May explain why I always got blips evertime I passed a grocery store that had automatic doors.

 

Does anyone know when Valentine's patent for the arrow display expires? Should be coming up soon if I'm thinking correctly that patents like this are only good for 25 years.

Man,... this may be the new Gold standard detector.

I've been loyal to Mike Valentine for going on 20 years, due in large part to the *disruption* that I believe he caused by striking out on his own and raising the bar so far above the crap detectors being made at that time. Rightly or wrongly, I tend to credit him with making the big OEM's scramble to catch up in performance... leading to the great detectors we have now.

I remember when being able to capture radar from a mile away was a huge deal. Those guys doing so much testing at the RDforum linked above seem legitimate to me; here's a nice video that summarizes much of that testing if you're not into reading lengthy posts.

This new R1/R3 seems to be detecting Ka band from "well over 2 miles"! Talk about early warning detection. WOW.

 

What do you get for the extra 100$ with the R3?

 

Differences between the Uniden R1 & R3 » Vortex Radar

 

Tired of the constant BSM falses from my Redline, I had an R3 preorder scheduled for delivery about now from Tom at BRD. After a bit of research and talk with Tom, I canceled the R3 order and ordered one of his Net Radar (NR) units. The NR has decent range, good BSM rejection, GPS lockouts, weatherproof and excellent interface with my ALP/ALP Connect (iPhone) laser system. The advantages of replacing the Redline are (1) Reduced BSM falses, (2) GPS lockouts, (3) ALP interface. I can monitor both radar (NR) and laser (ALP) wirelessly thru my iPhone (ALP Connect) and (4) Weatherproof. I no longer have to remove the Redline when leaving the bike. An added benefit is losing the gooseneck mounted Redline; an obvious clue of radar/laser protection for prying eyes.

I currently have one ALP laser jammer sensor mounted in front and one in rear. I will be installing the NR unit in front below headlight where I have the ALP laser sensor installed (see pic) and adding a 2nd front mounted ALP laser jammer sensor with one on each side of the NR unit. I've learned that two ALP sensors are required to jam the Dragoneye laser gun which is commonly used in my area of Atlanta. I'll still be open to rear hits from the Dragoneye but a much smaller target from the rear.

Yep. My install is semi-hidden on the flat surface below headlight although it can be totally hidden behind solid flat surface with minimal to no signal loss. My install is not noticeable unless you are looking for it.

How do you guys get the alerts to you?

 

I'm going to mount it high on the dash or rig up some kind of light. Not sure yet.....

 

My Escort Max2 and my Max with an Escort Live cord send audio warnings to my helmet communicator through my iPhone via Bluetooth in addition to giving me visuals on my phone's screen. I not only can see where on a map on my iPhone the radar is originating from, it's intensity and it's duration, but I also hear what kind of radar the unit is picking up; i.e., "Ka alert", "K band alert", "Laser alert." False alerts are much reduced on these units and when they do go off, I can see the lack of intensity and duration (the warning display cancels and the map display reappears in seconds on false alarms, whereas, when there actually is radar, the warning screen stays on and the big bar graph shows the radar intensifying as I approach its source) so I don't have to change my ride every time a false alarm goes off. I also can see and hear where others have been painted far ahead of the range of any detectors as well as where there are red light cameras, speed traps, speed cameras ahead. The audio warnings are game changers for me over my previously used H.A.R.D. System of flashing lights.

 

Chris, yes, that is my understanding. I have the SR10, Kenwood, etc installed. The Uniden came in last week but I had to order a 12v power cable. We're in Cancun for 10 days, when I get home I'll finish the installation and post.

 

I decided I didn't want to wait for late July to receive the Uniden R3 so I changed my order to the R1. It's really all I need anyway. I actually bought two. One for the GTL and one that I will swap between my car and my RT.

My setup will be; Uniden R1 ---->wired to---->SR10----> bluetooth to---->Sena20.

I can add a radio for next years Dragon week any time.

 

I decided I didn't want to wait for late July to receive the Uniden R3 so I changed my order to the R1.

There is a new firmware update for the Uniden R1/R3 models. I just returned from a road trip with the R3 and it performs as advertised. The range was incredible and the BSM falsing was also reduced by the updated firmware.

 

My Uniden R1's arrived along with the Sena SR10. Hooked it all up and works like a charm. Radar alerts through my Sena20 into helmet. Radar gets priority over music, NAV and talk. Exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks Duane & Greg!!

Same here, Best Radar Detectors.

 

I ordered direct from uniden. No evidence, but experience says manufacturers ship direct to their customers (vs retailers) in a back order condition. You pay a premium of course and the gamble is in demand re enough for retailers.

Based on those I know here, little difference between direct and the sources above. Some, may argue better thru reseller.
