Retrofiting Navigation

Retrofitting Navigation

I own a 2011 K1600 EU spec. without Audio or GPS preperation and I am exploring the possibility to retrofit navigation (Nav V) to the bike.

My guess is that I at least need these parts:

46638382723 - Instrument cover (Navigator 6)
46638549505 - Cover panel with GPS at top (Navigator 6)
Or
46637722507 - Instrument cover (Navigator 5)
46638526882 - Cover panel with GPS at top (Navigator 5)

And
46637724088 - GPS housing (Navigator IV, V and VI)
And
77527721941 - Mount Cradle (Navigator IV, V and VI)

My questions are;
- Has someone did this before (could not find anyone)?
- Does a bike without the GPS preperation have the required connections for power and LIN bus (So i can use the scrollwheel)?
- Does the bike need to be coded for navigation?
- Can I use the instrument cover for the Navigator VI to house the V (So i can upgrade tot the VI in the future)?

Thanks!

I always thought the term "without gps prep" means you also don't have the wiring and mounting hardware behind the instrument cover to accommodate the GPS. So adding the correct instrument and dash covers isnt going to help you as the little arm that rises up that holds the gps isn't there as well as the wiring connections to it like power and wonder wheel connections..

I think your down to 2 options.

Buy a gps unit that's waterproof and Bluetooth compatible and mount it to the bars.

Or...

Trade for a newer model bike that's equipped to accept a GPS.

Thats where I need the GPS housing for. This is te hardware behind the instrument cover that pops up and holds the GPS unit.

As far as wiring connections go, the Wiring Harness part number for a bike with or without GPS prep are the same afaik (61118526176). This implies that the connections should be there. But i am not sure. I do not know where i can find them if i open her up.

77 52 7 721 941 is the GPS cradle though I can't see what wiring exists , and it may need a complete loom to give you the wonderwheel operation. Check your VIN number to find out the options

Or just run power to the GPS and call it a day. Wonderwheel is not necessary IMHO, and connect the GPS to your helmet com and you're good to go. Admittedly I'm a believer in stopping to play with the GPS though. I love my 595 I use on my other bike better than the Nav 6.

There is really very little the wonder wheel does with the Nav. It’s not like the bikes information display system...Other than changing a page layout or zooming in and out, that’s it. Everything else is touch screen related. If the wiring loom is not there but the cradle is, I’d just run power to it and call it good. WW functionality is just not worth the hassle or expense.

PHP:

No, it's definitly not there. I looked. If I had one I would also have a "hole" in the top instrument panel.

I need to know if i can get the WW working. Because otherwise the whole deal is off because i need to buy all these extra parts (EUR 350,-) just to place the navigation in that place. There are better solutions available for a lot less money, like this from Starcom1: https://starcom1.eu/shop/producten/gps/starcom1-bmw-k1600gt-gtl-gps-mount/.

I think the big question is; are the power, and more important, the LIN connections there allready. Next problem will be the coding, if needed.

After being on this forum for 4 years I have not heard of anyone trying to fit a Nav into a nonNav bike.

That means you are on your own figuring it out and on your own for whether you can get it to connect to the WW.

Not trying to be harsh but it is the reality.

Story of my life :)

Does anybody with a nav know where the cables of the gps cradle connect to the wiring harness? Should be two cables from the cradle itself (power and LIN i guess) and one from the "switch" at the bottom on the sliding GPS holder (alarm and to keep the windsheeld up i also guess).

Giving up isn't in my nature either but... I'm also smart enough to know a rabbit hole when I see one. I believe this to be a one way trip to disappointment and good money spent after bad.

However.. I will watch in hoping you prove me wrong. I might even pass on some tips along the way like..

Very few K1600's come to the states in your configuration. So the chances of getting your questions answered here are slim at best. Before you spend a dime contact your local dealer and have a serious talk to the service department. Ask them all the questions you posed here, If the answer is no to any of these questions... then you know to stop right there before spending money on parts.

I have asked cbdane for some help. He seems to know a thing or two about the GPS and LIN wiring.

If the weather permits i will remove some panels so i can take a look at the existing wiring and see if i can find some unused connectors.

*cbdane mentioned: "The wiring harness for the stock dash cradle can be easily located underneath the dark grey trim pieces on the top of the right side of the fuel tank.
[...] the three pin connector is buried deep along the inside of the fuel tank, making it very difficult (impossible without removing the tank?) to get to"

Can anybody with a 2011/2012 bike with navigation tell me if there is a seperate "Navigation" menu in the boardcomputer? I have seen this on the newer bikes. but not sure if the older ones with Navigator IV also have this extra menu. This would imply that i also need some coding done. If not, my guess is that i don't need coding to get the wonderwheel working.

I removed some of the panels on the right side and found 4 unused connectors. Three 2 wire connectors and one 3 wire. Need advise or an wiring diagram to identify them. But they are were cbdane said they would be....

Man Boccaccio, that Starcom mount is ugly as heck but to get my 595 back I'm almost ready to ditch the Nav 6! BTW I get it on the challenge thing, I have the personality flaw too >:)

I would just talk to a dealer and get the skinny and what it will take. As a guy who is famous for taking the long way around a problem, you can quickly waste a lot of time and money. Thinking through it, it would probably cost BMW more to manufacture the bikes different on the main line, so most of the basic infrastructure for the Nav is probably in there somewhere. I'm betting there is an empty connection on a sub-harness off the main harness that a pigtail to the nav would plug into. If you can find that it's basically get that and the plastic parts - pretty much plug-n-play. I also think the programming for all these options is in the bike, it just turns stuff off if the item isn't there. Hard to believe BMW would require a reflash for options, the factory would just put on what they want and the bike sees it and boots that up too. Just a guess on my part though obviously.

Sorry, long post to tell you stuff you already figured out!

Got some better pictures of that 3 pin connector. Need to figure out if this is “the one”. One source said that the 3 pin connector is for Ground, LIN and 12V. The 2 pin connector is for audio. And audio is not something that you need to make it work. Also, i don't have audio, or the audio wiring.

Pin 1 - GROUND
Pin 2 - LIN/CAN bus
Pin 3 - +12V

This is looking good. Need to borrow my brothers Nav VI + Cradle and hook it up to see if i can get this baby to work!

Is the connector same as on this image? That means male version (83300413585) is needed to connect, right?

Good news. The navigation works!

Bought the parts I needed secondhand for EUR 100,- (see picture).
Installation is straightforward and easy. Took me 60 min. maximum.

Connected the 3 pin connector to the connector I found earlier to the right of the fueltank (see pictures of previeus post).

And it all started working when I inserted my brothers Navigator 6.

Got the extra 'Navigation' menu in my boardcomputer and I can use the thumbwheel to switch between screens and zoom in/out.

Sorry for bumping this old post. I used the instructions to do the same and it works like a charm, navigation shows as option in the menu.

However, when opening the upper part to remove the navigation, the screen doesn't stay up. I was wondering if there is also a connector needed to attach to the bottom part of the cradle and where that would be located?
