Fred,

What made you decide to choose the CalSci rather than the CeeBailey windshield? I am interested in getting a replacement for the OE but I would like to understand what the benefits are for each shield. Does the vent hole let through a lot of wind?
CalSci extra tall I think is unique and it has really paid off. I also have heard good things about CBaily, too. I thought Mark at CalSci was really focusing on areo dynamics. I did not check with his competition, the result has been great. I also was in a hurry since both BMW shields really sucked. They looked good but not functional. In defense of the BMW shields though is I am really tall if BMW made it work for me most guys would have said they sucked. Noise is better, too...I mean quieter. The shield was shipped in micro fiber so it wouldn't get scratched. I hope this helps. I really love the bike now. I was really concerned since I have liked the 1200RT so much, but now I wouldn't trade back.:k16:

I am seriously thinking about a new windshield and think that the CA might be what I am looking for.

My bike, by mistake came with the GT windshield and I'm just wondering if the buffeting that I am getting from it would go away with the regular GTL windshield that it was supposed to come with or if there would be a nice difference going with the CA?

I might even be open to swaping with someone who would like to try mine on their bike. I'm in Tampa, FL.
You could try mine if you want, it's the standard GTL screen, and very noisy. My SciCal should be here Wed evening 9/21/2011. I doubt very much if the GTL screen in any quieter than the GT screen. Not having riden behind a GT screen, i'd have thought from the looks that the GT screen would be quieter.

I'm "sort of" working next weekend (on-call), but could likely arrange to meet in Sarasota or somewhere for some screen swapping if you'd like, probably Sunday 9/24/11, or if you want to ride to Fort Myers, Saturday afternoon would work for me. Send me a PM if you'd like to arrange something.

Ruben

Is there a verdict out on which wind screen works the best for helmet wind noise. I really would like to start enjoying my $1k+ Schuberth.

Don

I put a Cee Baily's on my GTL last week. If is was to put a number how much better than the stock I would say 20% improved. I like it, it helps but I still get a lot more air than I would like. This bike is not a LT. It is about the only thing that I don't like better than my old LT.

I have a Shoei, 2 Aris, and a C3. Wind noise is GREATLY reduced with the CalSci windshield. Its the difference between ok and excellent:clap:
I agree. I'm stunned how much quieter the CalSci shield is. So quiet I have to wonder why BMW didn't provide one like this, at least for the GTL. Works wonders for the pillion too. :)

I met you at bike night

I remember your plate. I was the guy drooling over your GTL. Guess what, I got mine Tuesday!!:gm and my friend gets his soon.

So far what I'm hearing here is the CalSci is the way I may go. I really do want to improve the buffeting of the pillion/better 1/2 also. Are the wind screens an easy/do it yourself install?

Don
Yes, easy DIY install. Takes a Torx 25 driver. Remove the four screws from the two chrome pieces on the front of the windscreen, remove OEM shield, put new shield in place, re-install four screws (loose, do not tighten yet), rock shield from side to side to make sure everything in in place, verify shield is straight (it has an inch or so of adjustment, measured at the top, which if not straight MIGHT ?! result in some pull to one side), and tighten the four screws.

You should use a torque wrench, but if you're using a screwdriver handle type torx, hand tighten should be close. Be very careful if you're using any kind of ratchet or other handle type wrench.

Took me maybe five minutes, including admiring the nice shipping sleeve on the CalSci shield, and cleaning it off after install with the provided spray bottle and soft cleaning rag.

What about the hole in the Cal Sci windshield? Does it increase the wind on the rider? Does it let the rain through?
No wind on the rider, even holding a hand up too it I can feel no wind through it. I believe the air runs right up the back side of the windscreen as advertised. Likely why its so quiet and cancels out the forward helmet push that I got with the OEM unless it was set just right, then it was so noisy.

Edit: don't know about rain on rider yet, will likely find out this weekend.

Congrats-I do recall talking to two guys next to my bike, but they did not say they were getting one. Did we speak for a brief moment? We'll have to do a ride one day. My HD buddies don't really like me bringing the GTL on Sunday ride days to the Rock Store..Go figure-I think there just jealous-my HD's are just sitting collecting dust now days..

Dang RDKNGSE, looks like you need to get a hobby!

JK, beautiful bunch of bikes man, I'm just jealous 'cuz I've only got my GTL...:gm

A guy who tried the Cal-Sci windshield in the rain posted on another forum that the rain came through the vent hole and hit him pretty good at speeds below 50 mph. He said at about 45 mph, the rain actually hit him right in the helmet visor. That is probably a deal breaker for me.

I don't do a lot of riding in the rain, but that was exactly my concern with this windshield. It sounds like it will make a good dry weather setup, but now we're back to the drawing board for something that will work good in the wet weather.

You may want to wait for a few more reviews before writing the CalSci off.

The post above is taken out of context -- the OP in the other thread said that he experienced the rain intrusion during what sounds like a truely biblical rainstorm (cars down to 35 mph, etc.); the impression I had was that he didn't have any significant water intrusion problem with lighter rain. That would certainly be my experience with a CalSci with the same basic design on an R12RT.

No screen provides total protection in a real frog-strangler -- water gets flipped inward from the edges of solid screens into the vacuum/turbulance behind the screen. Given the choice between having water flipped on me in a downpour from a screen which generates buffeting in dry weather and water hitting me in a downpour from a screen that doesn't generate buffeting in dry weather, I'll take the latter.

That's some great feedback right there. I just spent the last hour searching around on the internet for all the possible shields for this bike and I'm not seeing too many negative comments on the CalSci. There aren't many K1600 customers out there, but the reviews on other bike models are pretty good.
