That's some great feedback right there. I just spent the last hour searching around on the internet for all the possible shields for this bike and I'm not seeing too many negative comments on the CalSci. There aren't many K1600 customers out there, but the reviews on other bike models are pretty good.
I just ordered a CalSci for my GTL. Thanks for the info!

I'm 5'10", Mark also recommended the medium touring shield. I just got it last night. I'll report back after I've had a chance to ride with it a few days. Forecast call for some rain this weekend, maybe I'll be able to weigh in on that discussion as well.

You may want to wait for a few more reviews before writing the CalSci off.

The post above is taken out of context -- the OP in the other thread said that he experienced the rain intrusion during what sounds like a truely biblical rainstorm (cars down to 35 mph, etc.); the impression I had was that he didn't have any significant water intrusion problem with lighter rain. That would certainly be my experience with a CalSci with the same basic design on an R12RT.

No screen provides total protection in a real frog-strangler -- water gets flipped inward from the edges of solid screens into the vacuum/turbulance behind the screen. Given the choice between having water flipped on me in a downpour from a screen which generates buffeting in dry weather and water hitting me in a downpour from a screen that doesn't generate buffeting in dry weather, I'll take the latter.
You're absolutly right, I was that poster, and was riding in such heavy rain that even some cars were pulling over, due to lack of visibility, and what must have been three inches of water standing on the road. I would normally pull over in such conditions too, as it was more like a stream crossing that a road, but I wanted to check out the absolutly worst case conditions. I STILL love this windscreen. The amount of water coming through the opening was surprisingly small, considering the conditions, and I was pushing for as much speed as I dared to agravate any problem.

Is it quieter than the stock windshield?
Quieter, not completely without wind noise. I'll have to play around more to see if I can find the sweet spot. I am curious if a slightly taller shield would put the wind over my head without having to move the screen further up. It seems like I get some back pressure when I have the screen up high enough so the wind goes up and over my helmet.

Was it $230 quieter?

If you factored in delay in my hearing loss due to wind noise and the associated increase cost in hearing aids, and then adjust for the conter effect of the increased clarity and volume of the music that I'm playing, the overall cost savings is probably in the neighborhood of -$50,000. However, when you take into account the increased arc of the smile on my face, it's DEFINATELY worth it :k16:

Finally beat my head cold and got a chance to try out the new screen. It was a short ride only 40 miles or so, but what an amazing difference over the stock screen. It's much quieter and I got the large (-1 1/2" of the stock). I only had to raise it about 2 inches to attain a comfortable and quiet position. I put my hand up to the hole and felt the wind rushing through, but as I slowly retracted it the wind dissipated quickly, and when my hand was about 12 - 14 inches from me I felt almost no breeze. There were little to no turbulence on my head or arms, even w one hand on my hip, which I noticed with the stock screen. I can't speak for the pillion yet as my wife is traveling. We are expecting light to moderate rain in the next couple days so I'll report on that latter, but overall an outstanding screen. The best I've had on any bike. I really can't see the rain being a problem with the hole. The screen is so far down the hole is really not in a position to throw much rain at you. If I had to be picky I'd say the only drawback is looking through it is somehow not as clear as the stock, but I really don't need to look through it with the protection it gives, and that said I've looked through many worse screens that offered a fraction of the protection. Hopeing the pillion likes it as much as I do, cause this one is a keeper

Rode my GT home from the 6k service at the dealer today.

It's about 110 miles and it was 40-45 F for the trip with 20 mph winds gusting to over 40.

This was my first trip using the Cal Sci windscreen. Mark suggested the GTL Large for me, however I opted for the GTL XL as I am looking for early and late season riding comfort and protection.

I am. and usually have been. a 2 windscreen rider. One for cold weather early/late season and one for the hot muggy times of the summer.

The ride today did show better protection than the Cee Bailey I have been using during the hot months.

The main difference was I noticed better protection for the shoulder and upper arm areas. The wider Cal Sci screen made the windy and cool ride much more comfortable. Of course, I had on my heated Aerostich jacket on with insulated gloves and the heat on both the rips and seat.

I think this combo of windscreens will extend my riding season as I will be able to remain more comfortable early and late in the year.

Worth the investment to me for the extension of the protection when needed.

YMMV

I too am not satisfied with the stock windshield. The buffeting and wind noise around my ears was actually painful at times, so after reading this thread I ordered the Cal Sci Large. Holding it up to the stock windshield, size and shape wise, it is practically the same windshield only with a hole in it. While it does lessen the buffeting noise around my ears somewhat, the overall quality is poor in my opinion. The outside edges have been cleaned up and buffed slightly, but the edges are still a bit sharp. The edges of the hole were left completely untouched from the raw cut. The edges there are very sharp and the saw marks are plainly visible and very noticeable. Everyone I have shown it to has pointed it out. I plan to take it back off and see if I can smooth them out a bit. For $200 I think they could and should be putting out a better quality product.

Calsi Screens

This thread seems to have died somewhat, has anyone got any new views on calsi screens, or Airoflow who I understand are also testing, the last post mentioned quality from Calsi has anyone got any further comments.
Also if you have a Calsi screen any chance of some detailed pics from all areas to show its qualities or NOT

Last Q what are you guys paying for the crash bars in the states ? if we had any the UK dealer told me ÂŁ224.00 which is $350 ish

 :gm:gm

Was the wind noise any better than the stock shield?

The CalSci is MUCH quieter than stock GT screen and finding the sweet spot is easy to find within a wider range of comfort settings/positions.
