Anyone know if it is possible to import a Waypoint file into the app? No routes between the waypoints, but just the waypoints? Or convert the waypoints to POI's and show them?

Well I am nearly there. Loaded the data into MyRoute as a POI file. Need to see if the Connected app has a similar function, or I'll have to use MyRoute to create a route using the POI and then transfer to the Connected app. In the Garmin I had the info saved in my Favourites, so could create a route from there.
Yes it is straightforward. Create your route as a list of waypoints. I used gpx studio, which normally creates a route of thousands of points, but I got it to cut down to about 8.
The route was then emailed to my phone. The app opened automatically when I accessed the file, showing a "straight lines" preview between the points in the "Route Import" screen.
Opening the route converted it from straight lines between the points to wriggly lines following the roads.
