Ive got the new and improved RD shelf ready to go. Its now formed from 16ga stainless sheet metal from a local fabricator, they did a nice job, I'm happy with them.

I am also now using a thicker VHB tape, its also stickier than the last one I used so I dont see an issue of these falling off. Much like the last one, just be sure to attach it while its warm. They install all the way down to the bottom of the dash against the lip around the opening for the GPS. Take your time and dry fit it first so you can see how it fits. Use the included alcohol prep pad to clean the underside of the dash. Then peel the backing off the tape and carefully attach it making sure its centered. Also spend a few minutes pressing it onto the dash, it will stick!

Its thinner than the old ones and doesnt interfere with GPS visibility. Its much stiffer than the old one so bounce is also greatly reduced. I dont know how much as I havnt been able to ride lately but I would guess the bounce is gone. I just dont see it flexing that much, 16ga stainless is stiff when its short like this.

I have to bead blast and paint them to finish. The first 3 pictured I used a truck bed lining for paint. I like the stuff, its tough and has a nice texture but I may switch to a flat black in an attempt to closer match the look and texture of the dash.

Price is now $35 bucks delivered anywhere in the USA. If interested send me a PM for my PayPal address and I will get one out to you ASAP.

Thanks
Darb

ETA,
This is the tape I used on the shelves, incase someone needs to replace theirs.

Victor,
It will fit an 18 for sure. They are the same width as the last ones. The only change I made was to shorten the shelf by 1/4" to make sure theres clearance for the windshield.

All I did to route the wires was loosen up the dash screws and tucked the wires around and under the dash. Looking back, it might be easier to remove the dash (pretty easy) for the wire install. I used a small rubber grommet from the hardware store on the hole in the dash to protect the wires. Worked great!

That set up looks sharp! I would love to get a detector, the issues here in NJ is if a State Police sees it, he can stop you for no reason and take it, no explanation needed.

If you did some searching here on the forum theres been a few people who have installed Inconspicuous RD systems on their bikes and you wouldnt know by looking at it. One person had the alarm LED's installed in his mirrors, it was slick!

Darby do you think this new shelf is a significant improvement over your previous? I have the previous version and it's a useful addition, though it does bounce and after a few years I had to re-attach it using Gorilla Glue. Any discounts for returning buyers? I was also noticing that the contacts for your GPS are looking just a bit dull, you might want to clean them up a bit.

Yes, It is hands down better than the first one in every aspect, no bouncing like the old one as this one is 16ga Stainless and much more rigid. It also looks better, much better. I had trouble with bending the old ones to get them looking right, I have 20 of these new ones and they all look identical. It is leaps and bounds better than the old ones.

I have a local company make these for me. I have more time in these new ones sandblasting and painting than the I did making the old ones. These new ones also cost me twice as much to ship than the old ones. In short I have way more money into these than than the old ones so thats the reason for the price increase.

I would have to think about a past customer discount. It would depend on how many I could sell.

....perhaps we should start a new thread and give this back to Darby? By the way Darby's shelf is a good place to mount a detector, though it may cause some rear facing detection issues since it's directly in front of you, and potentially a passenger and trunk. I'm using his shelf for my ez-pass, front facing camera.
Yes, I would prefer this thread not turn into a discussion on detectors. I may have admin come in and clean it up.

That said.. I have an Escort Max 360 and have zero issues picking up an alert from behind, even with myself, wife and the top case in the way.

I've had the shelf installed for awhile, finally wired up the radar detector. Took it for short test drive around the neighborhood and was very happy with that location. :)

I will vouch that it is a quality piece of equipment. I purchased one, thinking I could mount my GoPro on it. Alas, the camera makes contact with the windscreen when its in the down position. So the shelf sits on my workbench at the moment.

I moved up from Darb's old RD Shelf to his new one. It's was well worth the upgrade! The old one had a tendency to bound around so I used it to mount my e-zpass and nothing more. The new one is significantly more robust and solid as a rock. It hasn't moved at all. I'm going to remount my ez-pass and a radar detector on this one. The toughest part of this project was removing the old mount, boy that mounting tape is strong!

Darb's shelf arrived quickly and I had time today to install it on KBiK and move my Adaptiv TPX Radar Detector.

Original installation used a single Ram ball secured through the upper dash panel bolt.

The three LED light is the Adaptiv Visual alert. It is very bright and is what I rely on at night.

New installation using Darb's Radar Shelf Ver 2

The detector is now mounted higher and just short of the Sport windshield I use. I still have an unrestricted view of the Navigator GPS.

I can attest to how tough the 16ga stainless steel is as I ruined one drill bit drilling the holes to mount the detector!

Overall I a very happy with the result.

Thanks Darb!

I just upgraded as well and the new version is stellar! Thanks, Darb!! Andy, how do you like the performance of the Adaptive radar detector? That's the "waterproof" version, correct?

Yes, contact @coyotek his mount is what I'm using for my XT2.
You can adapt his mount to utilize anything RAM mounts make. I use a RAM mount with a shelf for my Valentine 1 that's just screwed into the plastic dash to the right of the pop open phone storage.
