richlew do the ones from Germany include the electronics and is it a better deal?
@1004ron from what I understand, all Wilbers rebuild kits come from Germany and are shipped to the installer that you choose (e.g. Ted Porter, EPM). They do not include the ESA electronics, just the strut, spring, hardware. I'm going to take out my shock at home and drive over to EPM and have them rebuild it while I wait.

xxx641 and xxx642, maybe. No on the other 2.

Did you ever finish editing that vid?
I'm planning on doing my rear shock in a couple of days so, with abysmal planning, am now looking for hints from those that went before me :)
I'm sorry, I did not. I actually misplaced the sd card before finding it some months later. I never went back into it. It turns out I have been overly busy last year with all these hobbies I could never fully get into. It turns out I have too many. Last year (23) was my first full year retired from the Navy. I have another promised video to finish first. Sorry, Jon! It's almost complete :ROFLMAO: It will be great!

I won't hold my breath! We'll have another full roll of video from this coming year by then!

What kind of milage/age are we getting on these shocks before they need to be refreshed? My rear crapped out at 1yr/20k miles.

40k should be your max. Refreshing stock shocks not a good option; e.g. last I heard there was only 1 place in NJ that could rebuild stock shocks. For close to same cost you get a set of Wilbers built to your specs.

Yes, indeed. How did we ever get anything done before we retired?!
I wonder if there's a name for the hobby of "collecting hobbies"...
Rock on!

my rear shock blew @ 63K miles Dec 22. I bought the bike in May 21 with 40K. I knew going into buying the bike I would need new shocks. I should have gotten them right away. The last 15K miles have been excellent :)

@Gunnert Ahhh... something I have to look forward to soon, then.....
What is the contact to Wilber? How much does it cost all together? Should I do both at the same time?
Thanks!

Ted Porter @beemer Shop is the recognized go-to source for Wilbers/Tractive shocks. I'm not sure on the cost today but would guess all-in you're looking @$3K including labor. And yes, I'd do both at the same time.

I removed the rear shock today. Front will be done tomorrow. For those that have posted that they are hesitant. The rear is fairly simple. Especially, when you figure out the ESA plugs! All you really need is the repair manual, basic tools, and the ability to follow instructions . The front technically needs a special socket, but can be done without. As described from a previously posted video by @Tonycarthansr.

I am making a video of the removal and installion and will post when compete. This way others can have a visual on what the process is.

I was planning on Wilbers before spring. The bike had other ideas and starting leaking from the rear shock before Christmas.

I was a career Operations Specialist in the US Navy. If I can do it, anyone can! That's for the other sailors on the forum 🤣 View attachment 173694

Hello,

I am working on removing the Rear shock. After many tries I can't even get this stupid thing onto the center stand. Used a motorcycle lift underneath the bike but was worried about dropping the bike. Is there an easy way to do this or can I do this on the side stand ??

I have never been able to get any of these bikes up on the center stand. Not the LT, The RT or the GSA. They all are a Royal pain in the ass.

Also how do you get the entire thing to lift up like that as shown in the photo?? Is that needed to remove the rear shock ??

Thank you.

I am not sure if you absolutely need the bike in its center stand in order to remove the rear shock. Maybe it will take some "compression" of of the rear shock getting the wheel off of the ground?

If you look at the 30 second mark of the video you can see I used a floor jack with a 2x4 to lift the bike enough to get jack stands under the crash bars. If you do not have crash bars, you may be able to lift the bike enough to get a scissor jack under the front wheel. The bike will be quite tippy so maybe have another set of hands helping out

Here is a recent thread about different methods on getting the bike in its center stand.

Where is the Video you referred to ?

I jacked up the bike and was able to get it onto the center stand.

I am just not sure how you got the rear section of the bike to lift up and gain all that access.???

And is that needed or can the shock slide out from underneath the bike, perhaps by removing that Metal Triangle that the lower part of the shock mounts onto ?? This is for the Rear shock.

I removed the Battery and I assume all the other things next to the battery will need to come out too ??

Just trying to find a way to remove the rear shock by removing the least number of things.

Thank you.

It's in post number 13.

I'm assuming you do not have the maintenance/service DVD/manual. You really need it for this job and it explains how to do everything. I do not remember off hand as I have only done this once and am fairly new to the K bike and BMW.

I do not have the DVD. I have a PDF file of the manual. It shows the main steps but does not explain the Preparatory steps.

Are all these DVD's on ebay of the same quality and details ? How does one know which one is the best ??
