I am thinking about trying the Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 camera. It gets good reviews for being a camera but what interests me is how it interfaces with the Nav VI. On the Nav VI there is an icon to connect the camera. The Nav VI manual says the following.

VIRB® Remote
The VIRB remote function allows you to control your VIRB action camera using your device. Go to www.garmin.com/VIRB to purchase a VIRB action camera.
Controlling a VIRB Action Camera
Before you can use the VIRB remote function, you must enable the remote setting on your VIRB camera. See the VIRB Series Owner's Manual for more information.
1 Turn on your VIRB camera.
2 On your Navigator device, select Apps > VIRB Remote.
3 Wait while the device connects to your VIRB camera.
4 Select an option:
• Select Start Recording to record video.
• Select Stop Recording to stop recording video.
• Select Snapshot to take a photograph.

Has anyone tried this combination that might be able to offer some more information? Any chance the VIRB can be controlled by the left handlebar control wheel? That would be a valuable feature!

Thanks,

Steve

I’ve the VIRB 360, not the 30...I haven’t tried to pair it to the VI yet, maybe this weekend if I get a chance.

Overall the camera is pretty amazing. Fairly easy to use, good quality video and pics. You can operate it with voice commands, by sliding the switch manually (which is easy with gloves) or using the phone app.

Some downsides: battery life is pretty bad, you have to share photos/videos through sites like YouTube, Facebook or others [not instagram] (ie can’t send direct to people).

Here’s a link to my first couple test videos..nothing fancy just playing with the camera.

I’ll post if I get it synced with the VI...

The NAV VI remote function acts exactly like the Garmin remote. You can start and stop video, plus snap a photo. I have the setup and have tested in the garage. I'm heading out to DarBQ this morning with the full setup. Since I have the remote, its on the handlebar for now.

One thing that had I read on the RT forum was that the app on the Nav unit was a pain because it is buried to many layers down in the menus. They isn't a way to put it on the main screen via a shortcut for easy access. This post was a couple of months old though.

I’m betting that’s true. It’ll be a lot of work to get back to if you click away from that menu using the wonder wheel (ie changing the view, going to music, adjust suspension etc).

I mount my phone on the handlebars with an Xgrip and have the Garmin VIRB app open. Super easy to just hit record start/stop.

Or to reach up and slide the button forward or backward on the VIRB..Garmin made it pretty big with a solid confirmation that you’ve moved it. Downside to that is you’ll have to edit your hand out at the beginning/end of the video.

I have the Garmin Virb Ultra 30, a Gopro hero 5 and a hero 6. as well as the Nav 6 A couple of things:

1. The only sensible way to control the Virb is via the remote on the handlebar, which is good, its just stop and start, so forget about the Nav Vi unless you want to kill yourself.
2. I hooked up the Virb to an ELM327 which you can get on Amazon or Ebay for ÂŁ10. You can get a lot of data from the bike and include it in your videos.
3. Bad bit about the ELM3278 is that you have to remove it from your bike otherwise it runs the battery down, I know this.
4. So. I played about with all this data did some videos and then gave up.

Why:

1. The Gopro's are better quality.
2. The Virb steamed up in the waterproof case, they give you moisture pads to absorb the condensation and I bought more and cooked older ones in the oven to dry them out (true).
But I couldn't trust them to work.
This may not be an issue where you live.
3. I decided things like speed were not a smart thing to put on video's (wife and others might see it).

So I got a Garmin Virb Ultra 30 for sale.

BTW I am just back from Europe, I got one Gopro on the handlebar, right had side on a RAM mount and this year I bought a USB converter for the power plug on the right fairing and then a nice expandable USB lead which plugs into the Gopro, so the Gopro is charged all the time. No more fiddling about with batteries.

I also have the VIRB Ultra camera and enjoy using it. the NavVI interface isn't the way to go, you have to take your eyes off the road and it's just not safe.
I have done several different trips with it, the battery life is poor so i carry 3 total batteries for mine and swap them out.
Fun camera to see lean angle, speed, altitude etc. I do have the ELM327 module but have difficulty getting it to interface with the camera.
