All you have to do is type in “0W-40” into the advanced Search. Below is just a few of the results. Many more threads exist, that I didn’t bother supplying links to WRT to 0W-40 discussions

I am one who tried the AMSOIL 0W-40 Powersports oil. While I was not impressed with the used oil analysis from this particular oil after running through the K1600, I would not say it "performed poorly". Just not nearly as well as AMSOIL Metric Motorcycle 10W-40 does. I'd even venture a guess that the 0W-40 Powersports would actually outperform several of the other popular oil brands. I was surprised it didn't perform better, though. Being an AMSOIL product and all.

The Amsoil is not JASO. I just looked on the list. Not that hard to figure out.
Not sure if you really are that dense, just trying to be argumentative or what.
Please, that comment is too much and not necessary.

It was the great RL Lemke that was boasting about how great this oil is/was. When another member and myself got UOA’s done, they were concerning. I then called Amsoil on the telephone and they said it is not suitable for motorcycle engines where engine oil also lubricates the transmission. I spoke with 2 reps on the telephone(2 different occasions), and both said NOT to use it in motorcycles applications with a shared engine and transmission oil supply. There is a thread from a few years back where I made RL aware of this, but he refused to acknowledge that he was wrong to be using it. He knows more than UOA analysis results, and the Amsoil technical department, I guess. Some people are just too smart. Just like he pushed Sensaphonics for years 🙄. Anyway, read the threads I linked to and our back-and-forth is in there somewhere. Just call Amsoil yourself and pose the question to them, and then tell me RL is still right. Lol.

So, morale of the story for me is that even if an oil meets/exceeds etc the specs for our bikes, if it is not marketed as a MOTORCYCLE oil then I will not use it.

I don’t care what others choose to run.
I run Amsoil Metric 10W-40 and am very pleased with the UOAs I’ve had done.

...
For whatever reason, they have done in house testing to show it meets the spec, but never sent the info or...
I'm with you on this. I am fine using various things, and fine with others using whatever they like. I even appreciate it when they share their results (especially if they contain UOA data, preferably from a more reliable lab than BS).

Why I reply here is that I'm also overly picky at times, and in this case I wanted to say that many (most) of the marketers don't do any of this testing. They ask their additive supplier (or their blender if they're a motorcycle OEM, since the OEMs basically never formulate engine oils) what adds and bases to put together to meet MAx.

I use Polaris Labs ( POLARIS Laboratories ) for my UOA's. Glad to see I'm not the only one that questions BS labs. Kind of ironic when you use their initials!! :geek:

Most of the time, when I mention Polaris Labs, I get "never heard of them". Here is a link to a list of retail partners who uses them: Retail Partners

For crying out loud all I wanted to do was let folks who were complaining about the high cost of Castrol oil that here was a less expensive alternative.

Things seem kinda tense everywhere I go. I assumed it was me!! Been too hot for too long, perhaps. I'm considering a run up to Beartooth pass this weekend, because I've never seen it (unless I was on it when I was about 4 with the folks on a trip). Have longed to see it for many years. I wonder if I could get up there and back, with a few side rides included, in 54 hours....hmmm. A ride like that might just clear my head.

I'd be due for an oil change by the time I got back. Got any suggestions?? ;)

James In my mind it’s the best section of road in the country. When you get to Red Lodge there is a quicker way back to Cody but I doubt you could do the round trip in 54hr.
There are several other sections of highways getting there and back that are great also. Plan for 4-5 long days from Missouri.

I would stay with the expensive BMW oil.

You should know by now that starting an oil thread (even if it's not the "what's the best oil?" kind) is only going to give us the same old entertainment that just happened here. :p

...but we still want to know when there's a good price or sale! (y):ROFLMAO:

Tom
Tom you can thank brother Kevin for the oil entertainment.
I still have a case of Castrol that I'll use for my next oil change.

Food for thought. I drove for a transportation company that went 30K miles between oils changes. Always used 99 cent Pep Boys straight-30W types of oils. All of these cars went over 500K. Last I checked before leaving the company, one had surpassed 700K. All original engines. Most had to rebuild their transmissions, though. Some smoked. Some didn’t. But they all still ran.

The answer is yes. Whether you'll have a driver license when you get back is another issue. :)

Go ride it. Definitely top 5 road in the US, if not number 1. Ride it both ways.
